and where can I get one? this is my dad's and is who knows how many years old. I've seen some w/o the magnifying glass. I find them useful for working with small electronics. Or anything small for that matter.

I have always referred to them as "Helping Hands". Mine were in a very generic box though, so I don't know if everyone calls them that.

Just about any reasonably stocked electronics shop has one, they also come up on ebay I'm sure.

I've always heard them referred to as "helping hands" as well, though Jameco calls theirs the "third hand".

Helping hands! Shit I got mine at radio shack probably ten years ago and it is still right here on my desk. It was probably a birthday present. I wasn't a normal kid.

I don't like em because the clips cut the wire insulation if it gets heated while Im tinning or attaching them.

Take some small tubing or insulation and slip it over the jaws.
No more cutting, no more scratching.
