I have been building machines since 1991 or 1992 so I have had a dozen or so video cards to go with the 2 dozen or so CPUs in the same time however I could not remember many of the video cards.

Lets see.

In the early 1990s I believe I had 3 to 5 PCI based Matrox cards. Then an ATI Mach 64. Then a 5 to 7 nvidia AGP cards. Then 3 to 5 or so PCIe nVidia cards. For the last decade its been all nVidia since I use linux at least 50/50 and nVidia clearly has the best driver in linux.

Edit: I missed a couple of 3dfx voodoo cards.

Didn't buy GPU's until I was 13.

Nvidia FX5200
ATI 9600XT
-I think I had a 6xxx series card here but not 100%-
Nvidia 7900GS
Nvidia 8800GT
Nvidia 9800GT (SLI'd w/ 8800GT)
Nvidia GTX 275
ATI 5870 1GB
ATI 5870 1GB (Crossfired)

3D...
Nvidia Riva128 (Diamond Viper 330) -- $150 when I was 14 so worth it!
3DFX Voodoo (Diamond Monster 3D and Canopus Pure 3D 6 MB!!! Still have it) -- Quake never looked the same
Nvidia TNT (Diamond)
3DFX Voodoo 2 (Creative)
Nvidia TNT2 (Diamond, STB)
Savage 4 (Creative Labs 3D Blaster -- their first foray in to graphics and it sucked)
3DFX (Voodoo 3)
Nvidia Geforce Gen 1-5 (Asus, BFG)
ATI 4850 Crossfire (Diamond)
ATI 5870 (Asus)

To crossfire 5870's or get the 5970.... have to wait and see!

Man !, I should have wrote it down what I have spend on history of video cards, but this is my best guess list below.

First ATI onboard on PC

Matrix ??

Nvidia TNT

Nvidia Riva128

3DFX Voodoo

3DFX Voodoo 2

PowerVR Add-on

3dfx Voodoo Banshee

1 or 2 Geforce FX5200 series

Geforce 6800

Geforce 7900 GTO

Geforce 260 GTX

Geforce 2 x 450 GTS SLI (currently)

1. 3dfX Voodoo 3 3000 (8 or 16MB dedicated I think) was my first gaming card.

Got into gaming a lot more as I grew up.....

2. $300 for an ATI 9700 Pro (ran stock from ATI)
Fan died after 2 years..... got a new $20 Vantec GPU fan from newegg to replace it.
Had lots of problems with my stock ATI version of the 9700 pro so I dislike ATI now.

3. Nvidia XFX 6600GT (traded for random crap)

4. Nvidia XFX 8600GT (traded for random crap)

Through my ~14 years of PC gaming.....wow, been a while. Time flies!

I may be forgetting a few cards here or there. I'll add them later if I remember anymore.

Updated. :D

Used in main rigs:

3DFX Voodoo3 3000
3DFX Voodoo5 5500 *
ATi Radeon 9700
ATi Radeon x1900xt 256MB
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB **
ATi Radeon HD 4850 512MB **
AMD Radeon HD 7950 Boost

Used in HTPC:

ATi Radeon HD 5770

* marks the beginning of selecting and installing the card myself
** purchased not out of necessity, but of circumstance. 8800 was bought because I was offered a good deal for my x1900xt and the 8800 was a good price. 4850 was bought because the 8800 blew a MOSFET (wasn't overclocked) and I hadn't registered it with EVGA. Would be interesting to see what card I'd be using now had things gone differently during that time.

PNY Geforce 2MX 400 (PCI) (My foray into gaming)
XFX Geforce 4 MX4000 (PCI)
XFX Geforce 6600GT (AGP)
MSI Geforce 8500GT (Was replaced by an ASUS model, still works!)
HIS Radeon 4830
Geforce 8600GT (forget brand)
OEM Geforce GT230 (HP?)
MSI Geforce GTX750 (Gaming model, fantastic card)

Pretty sure thats the correct order.

Riva 128
3DFx Voodoo
3DFx Voodoo 2
3DFx Voodoo 5 5500
Geforce 4 Ti 4400
ATI X1800XT
2XATI 4850
2xAMD 6970
ATI 7970

Can't imagine anyone actually cares about any of this, but anyway:

ATi Rage LT Pro
Riva TNT2
Geforce 4 MX 420
Geforce 4 MX 440
ATi Radeon 9500 Pro
Geforce 4 Ti 4200
Geforce 6800 Ultra
Geforce 7800 GTX
Geforce M 7800 GS
ATi Radeon 4890
ATi Radeon 4890 X-Fire
Geforce GTX 670

Bought the 7800 GTX new for like $480 back in 2005, sold it later in 2007 for $25. Lesson learned.

Nvidia 6800GT
Nvidia 7800GT
Nvidia 7900GT
AMD 4850
AMD 5850
AMD 6950
AMD 6970
AMD 7950
AMD 290
Nvidia 970

A lot of my upgrades were small jumps, but most if not all of them i was able to either upgrade for free or for under $50
