Why I hate Steam

I just bought the retail version of Halflife2.

I have two rigs, one is fairly crappy, the other is my gaming rig, and has had problems installing programs for awhile. I have no idea why it does it, but I dont have the money to fix it. It doesnt even have a cd-rom drive, since anything I put in it gets a crc error in no time.

So usually what I do is install a game on the crappy computer, and copy it over to my gaming rig to play. Or, I make images on the crappy computer and copy them over to the gaming rig to install and play.

Cant do that with Steam. It disabled all my imaging software, refuses to install on my gaming rig, and refuses to let me download the game through steam on my gaming rig. This post is rambling and makes no sense but I am in a berserker rage from spending 3 hours to get this ass tastic game to work with no results.

You can fork out $50 bucks for a game, but you cant fork out $15 for a decent cd-rom?

Its not the cdrom, ive hooked up several. The problem is with the ide channels on my motherboard I think, I cant install anything without getting a crc error.

Ok... sounds like your problem is: PEBCAK

No need to apologize, your comment was more humorousthan hurtful. But one thing though, the way you described your PC situation it really sounds like your the problem and not steam. Also you say you install the games on your crappy comp and copy them over to your gaming PC-- what do you do when you need to patch a game? Start over?

Usually I can just copy over the registry settings from my other computer and it works just fine. Not Hl2, they must have something hidden pretty well.

Whats also annoying is something was installed to prevent the CDs from being imaged. You know, with having to have a registered cdkey and connecting to steam to validate and all this other security crap, you think it wouldnt be a big deal. For $60, I have a right to image the goddamn cd. Installing from an image is so much faster.

Oh, and I should be able to download it through steam but nope, their servers are down. I love Steam.

Just install steam, register, click on My Games, click on Half-Life 2 and click on "Register a product I already own" and type in your CD-key on the retail package.

Next thing you know, you're downloading HL2.

Steam most definitely doesn't disable burning software or anything like that. Or, I'm really lucky (on three computers). Also, the registry keys are "hidden" in plain sight.

Have you tried reformating?

Nope. I do that and it says "You already have registered this product." Its the retail Cd. And when I try to install it from steam it says the server is too busy. I have copied all of the registry settings over and my entire steam directory and it still doesnt see that I have hl2 installed.

I finally broke down and started playing it at 800by600 low quality on my crappy computer, just got to the gravity gun part. Nothing quite like tossing giant circular saw blades through 3 people at a time.

I love how when a few people dont have problems, it means it must be working correctly for the rest of us.

No, theres been several people with problems; including quite a few posting to Slashdot. Just your situation seems more user error prone, with the whole copying and moving things around when a simple installation would do fine.

I know, huh!

Just get better at using a computer, it will come in time I am sure. Good luck.

Because for the majority of people it works fine. People aren't going to post a new thread on a forum saying that HL2 works. On the contrary, people will post saying that HL2 does not work. That's just how it is.

Well why do you say that? I say it is because it's steam that won't let him work around the problems his PC has.

Steam sucks, I wish somebody would destroy it. When I bought Condition Zero to try CS steam wouldn't work right for hours, I couldn't run the new game I had bought. Unlike the guy who started this thread, my PC was in great shape without any problems, that is, until I tried to use Steam.

I hate steam. I have spent hours trying to get the game activated. And when it finally succeeded I still couldn't play because my DVD player couldnt read through the securom protection. The disc would continue to spin up and down until the game finally gave a time-out. I even had to install an old DVD drive that had no problems with it. I think that the pirated copies will be easier to operate than the legal copies. I really resent that.

And what about the people without an internet connection??

I really dislike steam. Right now i can not run orginal Half life b/c none of my valid 3 cd keys work. yes.. i have 3. lost a cd,, found a cd,, lost a cd,, found a cd ..etc etc.

but anyway.. thats not my point.

its bad for gamers. how so you ask?

1. Its a pain in the ass. Why would you want this in a game. Answer.. Valve can bypass Sierra and direct sale you the game . Thus they make more money and screw you.

How? what if they go out of business? several good companies in the past have like lookglass and system shock 2 or cave dog. so lets say the unthinkable happened and valve ceased to exist.. no hl2 for you then. its just a bad idea to tie a game to company like that in order to play.

2. i dont like installing software that i dont need. i can clearly see that hl needs an update and ill download it.

so what happens when you have 10 or 20 games on your compuer and they all want to install programs? what a pain in teh ass and a waste of cpu cycles and space.

i say fuck steam.
but no matter.. the masses will buy it and probably support the crap out of ignorance.

Valve ..go out of business?...theyre realeasing what may well be the best selling game of the last few years right now. ( what may be the best selling game since Myst). They got buvket upon bucket of cash rolling in. But yeah, I get ur point.

The whole thing seems to be a PR mess for Valve. They want to stop pirating..this isnt working. They want you to buy from them direct , fine but youd think thwy would have done it differently. Im sure it made sense to them when they thought it up. Lastly I got the game on release day installed in the middle of that evening, probably the worst time possible time to do it and I was updated, unlocked and playing not 10 minutes later so i dont have any problem with any of it.

WTF... Post this in other Hate Steam Threads...Your a minority.. how does it feel?

And another WTF.. You just posted that you didn't buy HL2 you fag!!!

i dont buy hl2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i wont buy hl2 just b/c of steam....

and when the pirates patch hl to fake steam.. ill laugh my balls off...

you will never stop the pirates... thats just funny that they even try.

This is absolutely no different than if you lost your original CD. You can still play HL by installing from the original CD.

What's to say that if Valve went out of business they wouldn't release a patch that would make Steam not necessary?

If you don't want it to take up CPU cycles do the same thing you'd do to any other program - close it.

Nah he just a fag... :D

How is it Steam's fault your DVD player has issues with copy protection?

Hey geek, why not start another thread about steam ? Hey why not disregard all the other threads cutting steam, and flood the forum with more !!

My bad I missed the original part but he's still a fag... :D I just can't say it enough...

So everyone who buys "Steam's Games" is ignorant.. just because you are having trouble with it?

Think again, this time more careful.. than guess who the ignorant one is. :p

I was just reading a post about someone losing there BF1942 CD key to a keygen... Well there is another plus for steam. Once your CD keys are register with your steam account then only that steam account can use them...

i like having the ability to talk to friend on an instant messenger w/o having to alt-tab or close the program. HL2 runs fine for me, but hope to God someone doesn't message me on AIM, or else it'll take me 3+ minutes just to get back to the game, assuming the game doesn't crash due to lack of memory.

valve or venvedi will continue to exist after the other, and with the number of people who own the game either one of them will take care of it, or modders will make something. it requires steam is up to initialize loading the game (make sure you're playing your copy. if you sign in under another name your save place will be different). if you minimize the game and close steam, it continues to exist. LAN CS:S works, as does HL2 in single-player.

umm, you tell it not to? you're informed of mmajor changes to your system, things like installing gamespy when installing some games. uncheck the box. that was a close call! games only do stuff when they're loaded, too. don't go trigger-happy on your mouse and click every shortcut that brings up a game so you don't have 10-20 games loaded at once.

you seem to have a lot of enthusiasm and energy. you like valve's work on HL2 but not on steam. valve released the SDK, go give back to the community. you seem to have a lot of things to improve upon, and you make it sound so simple.
