Will there be a profound difference between the 7900 gt and the gtx ?

Nvidia released the 6800 GT with similar specs to its ultra counter part.. despite a massive price tag difference. This lead to lots of GT sales, and very few ulta sales ( relatively speaking of course... )

I think Nvidia realised their mistake in releasing a beefy GT, I think thats why they cut four pipe lines in the 7800 GT... and it seems like they're taking things a step further with the 7900 gt..

From what i've noticed the 7900 GT is 200 mhz slower than its GTX counter part. Will the performance/ Price tag still be reasonable here ? Will we be able to get " GTX Like " performance out of these gt's ?

With the 7800 gt co from evga you can achieve gtx reference card performance... but they're isn't much of a large gap between the 7800 gt and the 7800 gtx.
 
There's definatly a lot left to speculation.

What I've heard is that the GT will be $300 ($500 for GTX), both will be 90nm shrinks of the 7800 GTX line (possible third quad?). the GTX will be 650 / 1600, the GT 450 / 1300. In short the 7900 GT will compete with the 7800 GTX and the 7900 GTX will usurp the 7800 GTX 512mb and cost less.

Basically I think nVidia is saying the 512GTX performed more or less well enough so a massive overhaul is unwarrented. Instead they went to 90nm (hence it being a 7X00 instead of 8X00) made some small clock boosts and are supplying a modfied product for less money.

I say you will be getting ~ 70% performance of the 7900 GTX, so a pretty fair difference considering it costs 60% of the money.

7900gtx will be much more powerful than the 7900gt, as clock speeds show
7900gtx may have a a 3rd quad, but the gt may still only have 7800gtx specs, pipe wise


im thinking with a 200 $ price difference the clockspeed is not the only thing different between the 2...

still...a card faster than a 7800gtx for 300 $!!! thats a deal in itself


right there is the best price performance card according to the current rumors..

True, but remember that number of pipes doesn't really matter that much any more, as we've seen with the 7800GT.


I agree with ~70% performance. That sounds about right for the "almost-top-end" card.
 
well partially true...

the 7800gt was only 4 pipes behind the gtx, and the clock speeds were closer

i was saying if nvidia took an ATi approach w the 3 alus per pipe on the 7900gtx = 72

the 7900gt would still be far behind

also

a 24 pipe 7900gt would be much weaker than a 7900gtx 32 pipe...do the math
