Windows popup errors on cold boot - irq issues too

Hi. I keep getting several Windows error messages on bootup. I'm also experiencing some crashes while playing City of Heroes that bring up a BSOD. The message there isn't ever up long enough for me to read anything but it's an IRQ_notequalto_orless type of thing.

When I click on the "more help" link it goes to a windows support page that suggests I have a driver problem. I have the most recent drivers from Nvidia and Creative, so I don't know quite what to do next. I know that the Nvidia drivers prompted Windows to give me a "not whql certified" message when I loaded them but there are tons of people using those drivers so I'm not sure that's the problem.

Any help would be *most* appreciated. I'm a computer idiot.

Here are the popup errors from Windows on bootup

To get the BSOD to stay on the screen, go to system properties > advanced > startup and recovery, then uncheck automatically reboot.

Next time the BSOD shows up get the stop code i.e. STOP: 0x0000008d
You can search microsoft.com for a description of it.

*More useful*

Near the bottom of the message it should give you the name of the driver that caused it.
i.e. WXYZ.SYS address....blah blah blah
^ that is the driver crashing the machine, try updating/reinstalling it.

Well, I guess for once I was happy to get a BSOD. :)

Here's the irq error message

0XD7C4AEBC, 0X0000000Z, 0X00000001, 0X804FA185

There wasn't any other part of the message on the screen so I'm hoping the device driver causing the problem is somewhere in that mess.

Thanks for the help!

Was the message something like:
STOP: 0x000000XX (0XD7C4AEBC, 0X0000000Z, 0X00000001, 0X804FA185)

If you can get the stop code (the number before the() ), you can look it up on microsoft.com, and get a general description of what's going on. Or you can google the STOP: 0x000000XX part of it.

There was more? How could I be so dumb as to miss that!

Oh well, I'll have to try to replicate it again.

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

Here's the full error

STOP: 0000000A (0XD7C4AEB0, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0X804FA185)

Today I blew away my video drivers with Detonator R.I.P. and went back to 6.1.7.6 which are the WHQL certified drivers from PNY (my card manufactuer). Obviously that hasn't fixed the problem.

I checked the event viewer and found an error entry that happened during my bootup.

Error code 0000000a, parameter1 d7c4aebc, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 804fa185.

So, it's narrowed down now I guess. If only I could find out what all of that *means*.

Near the bottom of the message it should give you the name of the driver that caused it.
i.e. WXYZ.SYS address....blah blah blah
^ that is the driver crashing the machine, try updating/reinstalling it.

I looked for this but it just wasn't present on the BSOD. The only crash info is what I have posted.

Again, thanks for your help!

When I view "Resources by connection" in the Device Manager, everything is on it's own IRQ except the following

(PCI) 21 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
(PCI) 21 Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI) 21 Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI) 21 Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
(PCI) 21 Via Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

I had some trouble with both the USB controller and the LAN controller when I installed Windows.

I had to use the Via all-in-ones to search for the drivers.

I have no idea why the same thing would be in there so many times.

It's not an IRQ thing. Post those minidumps on a site I can get to, and I'll tell you on monday what caused your machine to bsod.

(It is a bad driver, but I'll help you narrow down which bad driver.)

Thanks Rama! I appreciate you taking a look. The machine/driver info listed in my first post in this thread is correct except for the video drivers. Those are now the WHQL 6.1.7.6

When I was first setting up my dsl connection I found the forum and tools at dslreports very helfpul.

Their forum allows uploading of files so i started a thread there and attached all of the minidumps.

Here's the link.

As you'll see in that thread, I got the following errors while surfing yesterday.

ieexplore.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x1001d002" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate this program.

clicked ok and then got this immediately.

The instruction at "0x77f57bd2: referenced memory at "0x00ee0010". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate this program.

I had no idea what it meant, so I did an overnight memtest 86 scan. 20 passes with no errors. I didn't know what else to do with that information.

I got a brand new stop error today.

Stop: 0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XBFBC0176, 0XEB03597C, 0X00000000)

NV4_DISPdll Address BFBC0176 Base at BFB7000 Date Stamp 40F32b87

:(

The error suggests going into my bios and disabling caching and shadowing. It looks like a generic "you might try this" type of solution but I'll take a look and see if those things are enabled in my bios.

I have an Abit KV8-Pro. I'll add the minidump to the other posting.

You running a patched kernel? Are you overclocking? Your bugchecking in the kernel's timing routine each time. I've never seen that.

I'm not overclocking. I don't know what a patched kernel is, so I kinda doubt I'm running one of those either.

This is just an XP Pro install off the disc. When I installed it, for whatever reason, it wouldn't load the USB or LAN controllers but I got those from the Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers.
