windows wont start, BSOD

my friend gave me this laptop today. i figure i will probebly need to repair the xp installation because it wont even start in safe mode. windows starts loading but than this screen pops up.

anyone know how to fix it?

looks like a bad hard drive.

see if yoiu can run a diag on the drive

Put in your Windows XP Disk, run the Recovery console and run FIXBOOT, if that doesnt work, try the fixnbr command.....and if that doesn't work, try chkdsk /r

I think its funny that it says remove any newly installed hardware if he cant get to it.

Something is definantly wrong with the hard drive. Personally, since you don't have any data of importance to you on their, I would dump XP and do a fresh install.
