Windows XP stuck at startup

My sister's laptop will not boot into windows. It gets to the loading screen, with the scrolling progress bar below the Windows logo, and it get stuck there. The screen doesn't freeze, though. The progress bar just scrolls forever without any hard drive activity after 10 seconds or so. Safe mode works fine. Running a diagnostic startup (in msconfig) does not fix the problem. I ran a virus scan and adaware scan, found and deleted critical items, but it still won't boot.

Any ideas?

You could always do a repair install with the same level SP media as she has installed.

You might find more information if you check the system event logs when booting in safe mode. What virus/adware did you find?
