I Have: Cable Modem, WRT56G Router, and WAP54G Access point.

I want to avoid buying a wireless card for my desktop or sending a wire from my router to the desktop. Is there anyway to connect my modem to the WAP then send the connection to the router and connect it wired to my desktop?

Forgot to mention that the desktop is in another room than the modem.

Configure the WRT54G as a standard router, and set up its wireless (WPA/WPA2 + long randomized passkey). Connect it to the modem, configured appropriately for that.

Then set up the WAP54G in client mode and try to connect to that router wirelessly (you have to configure its wireless settings to be compatible with the main router).

If for some reason the client mode doesn't work (and you've tried checking the SSID, encryption mode, passkey, etc.) you could try the bridge mode. The WAP54G docs state that this should work between these two devices.
