Working with vmware fusion

Searched vmware's kb and came up with nothing, hopefully someone here can help me out; I'm new to macs and have a new mbp - also have vmware fusion and xp installed as a virtual machine. However, the default folder for vmware is on my mac's hardrive. I want to make the default location an external hardrive. How do i do this?

well VMs can be moved around just like a file, so just move the XP VM file over to the external drive

Initially, I tried that. However, once I selected the vm from within fusion, it copied it to the virtual machines folder on my main drive. Very f'n annoying
