Would a CPU with HT benefit me more than more RAM and a second GPU?

i5 6600k @ 4.3
Gigabyte z170x Gaming-7
4x4GB GSkill TridentZ 3000 C15
EVGA GTX1070 FTW

I have a small budget for an upgrade and want to get the most from it. Would a 6700/7700k provide a larger performance increase than another 1070 and 8-16GB more memory?

at what resolution are you playing?. if 1080P then upgrading to 6700K will offer a huge performance boost on A LOT of tittles, others may not be too much affected in the overall performance but will provide a gargantuan smoother experience as those same games will peg easily 4 threads at 100%.. if you are 2560x1440 the CPU will have a less role bottlenecking a GTX 1070 so a GTX 1080 will be the ideal path at that resolution, if you are at 1080P the GTX 1070 still have some legs to stretch for several years, I would upgrade blindly to a 6700K and OC to 4.5ghz just because my experience with anything less than 4c/8t has been terrible, stuttering, choppiness, lot of bottleneck in most of the games I play, so at the end it entirely depend on the Monitor and type of games you play.

You already have 16GB RAM more it's a waste of money for gaming at any resolution.

Games don't benefit from HT. Period.

16GB is already overkill for gaming.

If you want a better gaming experience then get a better GPU.

With that being said, don't bother with SLI 1070s. Sell that 1070 and buy a 1080Ti.

Thanks for the replies. For resolutions, I play at the relatively low 2560x1080 and Rift VR.

Take the 6600k up to 4.6-4.7ghz and wait to upgrade til next year with some new tech.

What's the actual 'issue' you're having? Stuttering? Low FPS? Or do you just want more FPS? If you're not actually experiencing any issues, don't bother. 2560x1080 is a good res for your setup, I can't see any major bottlenecks IMO.

can you buy more ram and another 1070 for the same price as a 6700k? seems like the cpu upgrade would be significantly cheaper. that being said, the 6600k is a decent quad to begin with. if anything, I'd second the motion to spend your upgrade budget on a higher end gpu and leave the rest alone.

Your first point there is not strictly true anymore. There are many games where HT does not offer much benefit, but there are now plenty of examples of games where the i7 does manage to pull a not-insignificant advantage over its i5 little brothers. In some cases, even an i5-6600k OC'd to 4.5 GHz is unable to keep up with an i7-6700k running at stock (4 GHz) because the games *can* push more threads, plus the i7 has more cache on it. Here is a video demonstrating.

With that said, moving to the i7 isn't necessarily the most efficient upgrade available either. Definitely agree with Skillz on the avoid-1070-SLI front; I sold my 1070 SLI setup for a single 1080 Ti and it is *worlds* better.

I think you should probably be good with the setup you have and maybe wait for the 8th or 9th gen chips, unless you have a pressing need to upgrade. I know on the Rift you're targeting 90 Hz at a higher-than-1080p resolution, but I would think your single 1070 would be mostly up to that task as well. If it's not, you could sell it and move to a 1080 or 1080 Ti as your possible upgrade, or just hold out for whatever comes next!

IMHO I agree with some previous posters, the move to a 1080/1080 Ti would provide the biggest benefit. Note that SLI 1070's would give you a nice boost but SLI "can" be problematic and isnt always supported. Your CPU and RAM look pretty good to me.
