Would a pci-x extender help?

I am trying to fit a dual slot vid card and still retain usability of the pci-x slot directly beneath the pcie slot that the vid card would drop into. would a pci-x extender cable work? Would the HSF of the vid card still get in the way and block even the extender cable? I really don't want to go w/c if I don't have to.
