Well, I was just about to buy a refurb x1800xl off newegg when I read a forum post over at XS that said that newer x1800xls use the slower 2.0ns ram that is only rated for 500mhz as opposed to the faster 1.4ns ram that is rated for 700mhz used on the older xl's/xt's...

can anyone confirm this? I'm just about ready to buy an x1800xl, however I don't want to buy one that sucks at overclocking...

its a luck of hte draw. im in between and have 1.6 with my all in wonder.

one guy got his 2.0 up to 700 with no problems. im sure u can get 600 with no problems

That's not bad.

I want to bench it at 650/700, but my 24/7 will probably be around 600/600.

I'm buying a Zalman vf700cu for it too btw...and I have a Silverstone 120mm 105cfm fan pointed right under the PCI-E slot....that's a hell of a lot of air.

Anyways I think I'll just take my chances and go for it. Thanks for the info bro :)

Just FYI:

I have an X1800XL with 2ns RAM and a VF700 and it did 621/621 in a hot case (stress tested).

I've moved it to a cooler case now (selling it and the PC), not tried maxing it yet but it goes to the max of overdrive no problem (575/550 or whatever it is) and is at 41c idle.

3D05 of 7500 on a Venice core 3000+ @ 2.3GHz with 512MHz RAM.

i have a fan under mine as well. i dont know if its doing anything tho. i also have ramsinks on the voltage regulatiors.

Wow, I never thought of that...that's a good idea.

Does the vf700 come with just enough ramsinks to cover the card memory, or does it leave some extra?

How do I check my NS? I bought an asus x1800xl in november so I'm wondering. I don't overclock though.

You have to take the cooler off so you can see the memory modules. Samsung chips are easily identified as it's indicated by the last two digits in the part code - ie if this it ends '16' then they are 1.6ns. I seem to remember Hynix chips not being quite so straightforward, but the last time I saw any of those was on a 9700. If you're not overclocking then I don't see the point really.

First x1800xl I bought had 1.4 ram, but also had other problems so I RMA'd it. It benched at 620/700 ~ very inconsistant however. Best 05' score with this card was 8600ish.

The one I receieved back from ATI was 2.0 ram. Core only wants to do 530 or so but the ram will do 666. 05 score on this card is 8600 like that however!

My brother has the saphire version of the card. I havent checked to see what ram it has. Just screwing with it briefly it seemed to clock better than both of my ATI cards @ around 610/700ish, and I did manage a 9000 on the dot score.

I have 2.0ns ram Haha! I love Asus. I'm happy I know this now because I paid a shitload more then what the card costs now.
