x1950pro or 7900gs

3DM 05 isn't that cpu based but 3DM 06 is very cpu based... if you had a C2D instead of your opteron I'd guess you'd see a 700-800 point difference in '06.

Please post up that 3DMark06 score when you get a chance (Or even better, the Comparison Link se we can match apples to apples)

I was reallllly Considering the x1950Pro, but decided to save $60 (Basically 25%) and get the 7900GS. So I am curious how they compare in a similar system.

Thats not bad. My x1800xt got 4931 at 688/800. Probably because of my X2, IDK...

When I was doing 3d05 and I OCd my opty 148 from 2200 to 2600mhz my scores went up from about 9K to 11K.

My 3DMark06 Score is 4494 with an X2-3800 at 2.0ghz and a 7900GS with a 561 Clock..

The x1950pro has high 05 scores (ATI seems to have some driver magic for 05), I'm more interested in 3DMark06.

Your 7900GS beats my 7800GTX which is maxed at 485/1.34 GHz. That's impressive. You'd probably be higher too if you didn't puss out on your X2 overclock. :)

Thanks.. I Do need to OC it, I have been on a "Stability" kick for a while. I had it at 2.4ghz (On stock Voltage, My ASRock will only go 1.4v) but it would crash out prime95 on the 2nd core in about an hour.. Might try dialing it in at 2.2. I have one awesome air cooling system on it, might as well use it.

So I guess what I'm seeing is that a 7900GS at stock speeds is slower than a X1950Pro, but when OC'd performs about the same (maybe a little better). THe X1950 Pro also doesn't OC as well, so you're probably looking at similar performance if you OC the 7900GS. The 7900GS is somewhat cheaper, but being cheaper also comes with the "hassle" (to some) of tweaking your card for higher OC's.

Is that the general consensus of this thread?

It depends. Most 7900GS' I've seen don't do better than the ATI unless you get by chance one with a better OC ability than others. Plus the cooler on the ATI is much quieter.

That's saying something because the coolers on my X1900's were terribly loud.

Well, I know the XT, XTX, and GT's coolers made me just want to rip them out of the case, but the new xtx cooler and the x1950 pro cooler really improve on those older cards. Also, My friend's GS' fan is loud. Really loud.

I've had the X1900XTX and the 7900GS, I currently run the 7900GS because I prefer NVIDIA's drivers. I also find this card to be quieter than the XTX, however its fan kicks on for stupid reasons (like a video) thats all controllable however...

I disagree on the quietness of the 7900gs fan :p first boot-up with it I shit my pants I thought something was ripping itself apart

I installed an X1950 Pro early this week and I am very happy with it. I use it to play HD content and the color is to my liking. I don’t plan to do any overclocking to keep the fan quiet (and it is a very quiet fan).

Maybe its the cooler, mine is a BFGtech one and the Fan/Cooler is smaller than my old 6800s.

I've got both, but am using the x1950 Pro because I have 2 of them in my system and they pump out the Folding@Home work units like nothing I've ever seen.

*edit*- apparently I can only publish one so I've got the x1950 Pro up. I can switch them though if someone really wants to see the 7900GS numbers.

whats your experience playing the same game with those two cards? any difference in gameplay?

The only game I play is WoW @ 1680x1050 and both cards have no problem with it. Even with most of the eye candy turned on I'm consistently at or above 60fps with either card.

To be honest though, I find the colors to be more vibrant with the x1950Pro. The 7900GS seemed a little washed out in comparison, but not by enough to really matter.

Personally I would just go with the cheaper of the two. My 7900GS was about $40 less and actually scored higher in 3dmark06, but I got the 2 x1950Pro's for the express purpose of running Folding@Home, so I'm using those instead.

*edit* changed my published 3dmark06 score to my 7900GS for another thread.

What kind of BS numbers are those? Links don't work for me, but the HIS should be around 5000, not 5500. And the 7900GS should be around 4500, not 5700.

1950 performs at 7900GT level and priced at 7900GS prices I'de go with the x1950

Yup. If he hasn't bought yet.

I just recently bought an HDCP ready card and I did A LOT of research. I was heading towards the 1950 but decided on a 7950GT because I got it at a terrific price.

However in OP's situation the 1950 vs 7900 GS is a no brainer. Pro FTW! Btw, I tend to lean for NV but the 1950 is soo much better.

I ended up with a 7950GT because of the killer price and because it has PureVideo. I'm using a junkbox 360 HD DVD player and NV is better for movies at the moment.

Well I bought the x1950pro, I flipped a coin, 220 dollars (with rush processing) later im getting the sapphire ultimate one. Newegg better be shipping it from new jersey so I can have it tomorrow.

Yeah. He bought it on page 2 which was a little while ago ;)

The more I think about it, the real competitor to the 7900GS is the X1900GT and the 7900GT is the competitor to the X1950Pro...at least in terms of where they fall pricewise in the market. You can get a 7900GS or X1900GT for around $150 or so. You can get a 7900GT or X1950 Pro for around $190-210.

Apparently I'm the only one who can see my 3dmark06 runs. here's a screen shot of both my 7900GS and x1950Pro side by side in the ORB.

I'll run 3dmark06 on my x1950pro again and post a screen shot of that as well. Funny thing is, I don't do any tweaking, no disabling services or any of the other bs, just close down any running programs, start 3dmark06 and run it with default setting.

Don't forget these cards were oc'd. (Not to mention the computer they are/were in)
HIS x1950 Pro IceQ Turbo 256mb 620/1480

The 7900GS is now in my nephew's computer, but If you want me to I can go get it tomorrow and swap it back in, change drivers and run 3dmark06 again. I've got the next 4 weeks off so I have the time.

Pros go as low as 189-199 depending on which one you want. GS are a tad less so they are very similar in price.

From Xbit link
If we were to compare the available $199 graphics cards in terms of performance, the new ATI Radeon X1950 Pro is not just better than the Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS but can successfully compete with the more expensive Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT that belongs to the $259 category. Also important is that the Radeon X1950 Pro offers you the option of enabling high-quality anisotropic filtering that surpasses everything Nvidia’s solutions can offer as of today. In other words, the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro is overall the best graphics card in the $199 price category. It is possible, however, that the price of products like GeForce 7900 GS, 7900 GT and 7950 GT will be going down at a fast rate and the Radeon X1950 Pro may find itself between a cheaper 7900 GS and a tremendous 7950 GT.

I got my brother a 7900GT for $180 or so, so I wouldn't say the 7900GT is in the $259 range. You can even get a 7950GT for $240 or so.

I OC'ed the X2-3800 from 2.0ghz to 2.4ghz and re-ran 3Dmark06, Went from 4494 to 4716. Not too shabby.

And remember that 550 core isn't exactly the highest 7900GS OC either. The voltmodded ones are hitting 650 - 700 on the core, and mine hit 800/1600 on the ram without any mods.

Huh. I was considering going to an X2 for my Asrock mobo, but considering I'm hitting 5004 3Dmark06 on my 7900GS on single core....

I'm on air cooling, The Dual Core Manchester X2-3800 I have is running pretty stable so far at 2.4.(X2-4600 Speed). I Could play with upping it a bit more. Since you are geting a Solid 2.8GHZ, it probably wouldnt pay for you to upgrade to anything less than an X2-5200 or FX62 and OC it. Then you are in Conroe Range.
