Okay. So i'm interrested in purchasing a cheap, midrange card. I have around 175 bucks, so I see that the X850XT is a decent choice for PCI-E as opposed to the 7600gt. (Although I'm not totally sure about this...I get 1/2 saying for the Nvidia and 1/2 for the ATI)

I'm coming from a very crappy 6800 vanilla, so I was trying to get some advice from past/current owners on whether or not this card is worth it. I like the 256 Gddr3, 16 pipes and the 256-bit memory interface. So will I see a huge boost in games?

BF2 and CS:S are played a LOT and Prey...occasionaly (I like to keep the resolution at 1280 x 1024)

Will it play my games for some time? I'm not crazy about HDR so having SM 2.0 won't kill me. (I AM coming from a 6800..)

Anyways thanks in advance.

I would say the 7600gt merely b/c its new tech, and b/c its widely available. I contemplated the x850xt... but with x1k cards around the $200-300, why bother.

But seriously for the price, 7600gt.

Exactly. X850XT is a great card, but why bother anymore when new equal cards are about the same price.

The 7600gt runs 128-bit memory and whips most of the 6-series cards.
Cool. Thanks. Reading all this and staring at prices makes me want to save up money and get an X1800XT. Cuz if 2 7600gt's in SLI is creamed by a single 7900gt, and the x1800xt's faster than that... :p

Thanks xtasy.

Yeah I'd say get an x850 range card only if you can find it for considerably cheaper than a 7600gt.

Having owned an x850xt pe I can honestly say that in its day it was beast and if it wasn't for the absence of SM3 then it would still be up there.

If you can get one cheap then go for it, otherwise stick with a 7600gt.

It's still up there, considering no games require SM3. Oh well, I guess I can't turn on HDR in Oblivion. And, uh, that's it.

With all the tweaks and mods you don't need HDR. Tweaked bloom looks pretty good to me.

I dunno. That seems kinda like a good deal to me. Worth it over a 7600gt?

No. I would get the 7600gt HERE

i say go with either one.. both are good, i'm using x850xt pe.. which ins't far off from the x850xt..and well i'm gaming on 1680x1050 native resolution for CS:S and i have everything blown on max.. x6 antialiasing & x16 antistrophic filtering.. thing is crazy.. though my fps does drop when i'm in the sniping mood..
