Xbox Live, advertisements up, games down

The ads absolutely shit me to tears, and they are never of anything I find even remotely intertesting. I couldn't give less of a fuck about Justin Bieber or Linkin Park, but they are always on the fucking front page.

Yup its hilarious people still pay for XBL. You get ads.. and nothing in return that isn't free on other systems.

I get what I pay for. I hate the Metro UI, wish it never existed, and don't interact with it. I hit the Xbox button on the controller, launch games, check who's online, and join parties from there.

The exception is for when I launch Hulu, Netflix, and HBO Go, which are in my quickplay square on the front page. Averaged out over the price I've paid for membership over the last three years it's been about ~$2.50 a month. I get the same thing I've always wanted from it, regardless of UI. Multiplayer, and cross game party chat. Case closed.

Until they lock out Xbox button menu, I could care less. That's not to say that after reading the article, that I don't think the practice sucks. But it's sucked in various fashion since they started changing the UI and wrapping usability or system enhancements in the design teams' flavor of the month.

This is just one additional fly on the turd

I miss the old blade system.

QFT.
The only 360 UI that actually made any damn sense.
They tried (and failed) to copy the XMB with NXE, and they've made it even worse with the new version (whatever they're calling it).

My Live expires in a few days...I have no plans on re-upping it; don't spend enough time on the 360 (let alone online on it) to pay for Live. I wish they'd go free, but they won't.

I feel like they already charge a decently hefty amount for live.. do they really need the extra income from ads?

simple solution, don't support them

it has been almost 2 years since I got a 360 game

I am kind of the same, but I keep an eye out for newegg and amazon sales for xbox live time cards. I got 12 months for 20 bucks a bit ago. It's worth it for Hulu+ and Netflix and some gaming that I do, but yea it really does feel like it should be free with all the ads they are shoving down our throats.

I was in the beta for metro for 360, and they had a massive post of users all saying this is insanely way too much ads. Basically were told it was final and to accept it.

I've done the same for the last few years now, but I think at this point I'm just done.
Maybe when Gears: Judgment comes out, I'll pay for a month or two just to check out the new Horde stuff. Otherwise yearly subscription....I'm done with those, even at $30-35 breaking down to <$3 a month.
It's a minimal amount to pay, but when my use isn't there....it's not worth it. I just don't have the time anymore.

Next gen both Sony and Nintendo will add ads, guaranteed. Its basically easy cash money and they know it.. its only that MS has the infrastructure and software talent to shoe horn it in during this generation.

Also, people pay for TV and are littered with ads but you never hear them complaining, why? Because they're used to it.. and honestly, ad's are here to stay on consoles so these arguments will vanish over the coming years as people come to accept our new ad overlords.

In all seriousness, people like us on forums who bitch about stuff like this are such the minority. We are old men yelling at kids to get off our lawns and day dreaming of yesteryear. Every day a new young gamer picks up the hobby and slowly we are being bred out, and out numbered. An entire younger generation of consumer.. of gamer is emerging that has zero problems with ads, with streamed games, DRM and the like.. and they are going to continue to drive the market forward until another younger generation replaced them and they find themselves bitching and complaining on the internet to no avail.

We are being bred out and 'not supporting' or boycotting a company for changing business practices like this will make zero dent, zero change. MS is steam rolling the competition in sales and leading the way. They have no reason to change, and I expect even more lucrative business practices over the coming decade.

Get used to it people, and get used to the idea of Sony and Nintendo joining the fray. The sooner you accept it, the easier it will be when it arrives on their next consoles.

Yup, that's the attitude the majority has. Sadly you speak a lot of truth and companies and politicians just keep smiling.

Nintendo doesn't have a worthwhile online presence, and given their refusal to change - despite their "WiiU will have better online stuff, we swear!" blabbering....sorry, I don't think Nintendo's going to have ads, because I doubt the WiiU will have anything even remotely resembling a hub or centralized online feature set like Live.

Sony, meanwhile....they've put XMB in pretty much everything, including TV's. Not sure what the Vita is running or how much it's changed (because I have never used a Vita and I haven't really looked at one in person, ever, either)....but I think the XMB is here to stay. Ads don't really work well in the XMB, and even if they could put them in there and piss off people....I don't think they will. Ad free, free of cost online play is a major Ps3 selling point and I expect it to be a major Ps4 selling point as well. Don't forget ~ they earn revenue off PS+. The business is cutthroat and Sony's in last place this gen; why give people more reason to not buy their next console by putting ads all over it when every console of theirs before now has not been that way? It makes no sense.

Ads are on free TV too. Two different things here; you can't compare TV (free, cable, satellite or IPTV based) where any facet has ads - to game consoles and online services (Steam) where only 1 (XBL) has ads, and it just so happens the one with ads is the one that has ads whether you pay for it or not.

speaking of TV lol

Go watch a 1980's show were it was 52 minutes of show vs 8 mins of ads and now it is 42 mins of show and 18 mins of ads

I don't mind the ads personally cuz I just ignore them. The BETA fall update seems to have the same amount of ad space but more gaming related stuff as well. The new dashboard is faster and porn explorer is ok but it doesn't allowing video downloading or even buffering .. it will play streamed videos but nothing that needs to be downloaded to play.

Yep. People wonder why TV shows get torrented so much when the ad-to-show ratio is 0.43 and will continue to increase so they can minimise production costs and maximise advertising revenue.

ads dont bother me, unless they interrupt something i dont care.

LOL.. Faster? It seems to take longer for me to find and play my games..... Im being quite facetious here but it still seems way more clicks. Im sure with all the behind the scenes tweaking, the blade system would be even faster... It was pretty straghtforward and focused on what the xbox did way better then the others did, games. In fact, pressing the xbox button now is still based on the "blade system", and if im not mistaken was a point that major nelson even said on his sight when discussing the new gui update. If i recall thats part of the reason why xbox 360 doesnt have a browser and some of the other features ps3 did have...

I don't pay that much attention to the ads on the dashboard personally. If it's something I want to try out like a demo, I'll tap the source button on my monitor and queue it from the XBox site on my PC. That right there is why I will stick with buying XBox games for the foreseeable future, well that, cross-game chat (when I can get to reliable internet that I can use it with), and a system that lets me filter 12-year olds, general morons, and fucktards out of my games. PS3 doesn't really have any of those, as the feature set I mentioned is mostly game-specific and varies from game to game.

I own all four hardware, and try to use each to their advantages. Xbox does still seem to have the best multiplayer intergration across the board. Dont get me wrong, pc has arguably better, but you have to launch multiple programs to match the simplicity of xbox.. Which honestly for the most part isnt an issue on pc, though i did run into one or two people that couldnt run ventrilo at the same time playing wow.. heh..

Yes the fall update is FASTER you read it right.. BTW stop whining about ad space because if you don't like it don't look at it.
I don't see how it takes any longer to get to your games than it did before AND to correct you the fall update does have a browser and it makes the ps3 browser look like shit.

Ok, let me get this straight. Stop complaining about ads in a thread Tittled "Xbox Live, advertisements up, games down". Good one! Didnt George Carlin do a whole skit aobut stuff like that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6deudS3t7E

BTW yes i do for the most part ignore them. Just because you dont mind them, doesnt mean others dont. Thankfully MS had the smarts to leave the guide button alone. Which is still based on the blade system and has no ads.

i used to be a live subscriber but I vote with the wallet and I refuse to pay to get ads.....

Do you go to the movies? do you have cable? you pay for ads in other places. so quit your bitchin. If you don't like it get a wii

I definely think that paying for something and then getting ads too is a complete rip off. It is amazing how Americans will just put up with shit over and over.

I cut the cable because of this. Almost nothing worth watching tons of ads and a huge price, no wonder they made so much money for so long. I also dont own an Xbox and likely never will because of this. And I cant say I go to the theater much any more either about once a year. Sadly there are millions of people who just put up with it though. If you care, sell your xbox, if you dont and are not willing to do that then shut up and dont complain because you are the problem.

Quit your bitchin. If you don't like the topic, GTFO!

Thank you. I was trying to be nice.

BTW, back on topic. Im sure others have ran into this, but i remember reading a way to "block" the ads by setting your router to block a certain web page that updates the ads I would have tried it, but my router is to crappy and old to allow that. Though it wont help with the crappy UI.

I have been gold since Nov 15, 2002 until ~3 years ago. I don't play online anymore so I see no reason to pay. My Blu Ray player does Netflix just fine.

I always hated the ads (and there are shit tons of them too) and that definitely factors into my decision not to pay for the service.

One guy's comment on there was pretty spot on. He basically said," I don't understand how the PLaystation Plus could be the same amount per year, and have virtually no ads and you get a BUNCH of free stuff, compared to Live where you have to pay for the Gold membership to play online, watch YouTube, watch Netflix, and use Messenger to chat even if you bought the kinect." I remember just wanting to chat using the Kinect which is great for video chatting with my family overseas, but I have to pay for xbox live to do it, and to watch Netflix which I already pay a subscription fee for. The ads on live are way too much, and you get nothing cool for free unlike Playstation Plus where you get free full games, exclusive beta acces, free dynamic themes, wallpapers, and other stuff...

Sony is behind, they will be willing just like EA to do many things to try to catch up. The question is once they do catch up what next? Ads, control? Think of it just like the PS3 where first because they were behind SONY promised total backwards compatibility, they allowed and supported things like using linux, but as time went on minds changed. The reality is once a player is settled in a market and knows many people are hooked they will do it all. If you buy into plus with almost certainty this will all come in time. The reality is if you game much and you use a console though, these extra services seem like an OK deal, I know lots of people who never go online but still have XBL gold because they say between some free games and deals you get it ends up being roughly free (in their minds) and people are saying the same thing about plus. Its all a big ploy to get you addicted to a model where no matter what you pay a subscription.
