wow, if this eventually becomes true (which it probably will be since this is ms we are talking about - just look at the awesome value of their hard drives and wireless adapters), i don't see myself continuing to use the service, especially if the ps3 has online gaming for free. well, unless sony decides to start charging too. the bad part is most gold members won't have a problem with price hikes, i imagine.

if you spread the charges out for the year it really isnt unreasonable. I understand it does suck though

its just a prediction by Michael Pachter. And if you don't know who that is.. hes wrong quite often.

true, but ms practically started the trend turning content that used to be free into "premium" dlc with their xbox live service back in the day. i don't see this being that far-fetched. like the saying goes, even a broken clock is right two times a day.

I support 360 and can easily pay the gold fees but its still a lame move by MS.
you should not charge extra to go play your games online period. Yes MS is hosting a pretty solid network for all 360 games but pass that cost on the developers who would have to use pay for their own master servers anyway.

While they could raise the prices I think if anything they will stay the same or come down. You figure at some point sony's offering will get good enough to make people question paying for live.

There will always be the buy.com and amazon sales, even if they do go up. I haven't paid more than $30 for a 12 month Live card ever.

It's one of the reasons I don't have a problem with it.

Unless there's a significant upgrade i.e. no more p2p, I wouldn't go for it. I love Live, but I love my money more. If anything, it should go down since they're the only company that charges.

having to pay to use ur own bandwidth, and to play any paid for game online is just plain stupid imo. im suprised ms didnt do an activision with exchange rates

+1 on this, get rid of the p2p shit and I would pay 100 for it. But a 100 bucks right now to play call of duty and have a good game going for myself and some prick pulling his connection thats the host cuz he's getting his ass owned and he doesnt want it to effect his stats....no fucking way I would pay 100.

Thats a baaaaaad idea.

Lets just say there are a half dozen developers out there. They produice one game each. Now you want to play all 6 of those games, but MS doesn't regulate the online portion so each dev can do what they want.

First thing that happens is you're now paying 6 different subscription fees. And they're probably going to be $5-$10 a month to cover costs.

Next, your expereinece isn't going to be consistant. Some developers might have more problems than others with their servers while others run fine. The method used to get online might be a little different. Probably not a huge problem for most, but some people will be lost.

And finally you aren't going to have a central places for management. You're going to need to sign in to each companies game servers every time you play. Which again is no big deal, but some people are going to loose their username for this server and their password for that one, which menas they're putting overhead costs back on the developers.

In the end, I feel that microsoft is actually saving the devleopers some coin in IT costs and management, which may not be driving the cost of the game down, but it could be preventing it from going up.

The cost of live for the actual service MS provides isn't that much. Sony may give it away for now but it will catch up and you will end up paying for "premium" content eventually.

Seriously 360 gamers MS is not your friend. They will take any action to suck another dime out of you. Abandon that system now. Do not support the MS borg empire. Game on any other platform first.

huh?
look at the PC, all game devs are responsible for keeping up master servers to centralize all the dedicated servers and p2p lobbies. This is always free unless its some MMO where the company needs to host the actual game servers.
Now for the 360 all I'm saying is instead of maintaining your own master servers, just pay MS to do it for you.

If anything I would see the increased popularity of dlc resulting in ms lowering live fees as opposed to raising them, since they make money off of every dlc transaction as well. In the early days of xbox live it made sense to charge for it but nowadays it seems unnecessary.

Do you really think that DLC will subsidize monthly access? M$ is not a casino, and that model has largely died there as well. I can't get comped at a casino becuase I'm too small a player. Nor can I get cheap flights or cheap/free hotels either. Each part of the casinos is a profit center now. The hotels make money, the shows, the gaming. It's not like the old days where the gaming paid the bills and they gave everything else away to get you gaming.

I've been to Foxwoods where guys dropped over 5k and did not get comped.

Remember that MS laid off 5000 because they did not make enough money, not because of losses.

It's all about increasing revenues. DLC will become bigger and bigger, and over time, even I think that your monthly/annual access will increase. If MS had their way, every game would be downloadable, and they'd still charge you $60- no media costs. However metered bandwidth in the US is coming.

No I do not have a Live gold account. I game too little to justify it, and when I do game I virtually never go online, and I know I'm in the minority.

When a company makes more money, they have no reason to reduce prices, it doesn't trickle down either. They just post higher profit and see if they can get more. This is what a company is made to to do.

so ms is saving the developers moneyin the way that the developers dont have to use there own servers etc, charging you to use your already paid for bandwidth so you can game online and a few other tidbits like cross game chat, the 360 is way easier to develop for, yet why arent the retail games cheaper than the ps3s if ms is saving people all this money? MS have got your pants down good and proper and shoved their fist right up there!!!

I would prefer that they didn't raise the costs but i wouldn't drop my account if they did.

Xbox has a lot of features that are made available via Live. Streaming netflix is huge, not to mention all the game demos/videos. If they raise the price, i hope it comes along w/ Hulu support.

wow, if thye do raise the price I'd like to see a few more features a swell (built in xm/sirius players for one)

Alhought its all moot for me, i havent had to pay for xbox live in 3 years thanks to a billing screw up on there end :D

I get more enjoyment from XBL than any other online gaming service.

The rates right now are not expensive at all when you really look at it, so I have no problem paying them. I also usually find deals to use to renew so i dont even pay the full going rate.

It's total bullshit. I can't believe this is getting so much attention today. It's Pachter. He has no affiliation with Microsoft whatsoever. He's making this stuff up as he goes.

Sure when hits are low again, he will state that PSN will start charging:rolleyes:

Taken from an interview with MS spokeperson David Dennis:

Finally, Dennis tackled the recent prediction by Everyone's Favorite Analyst, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan, that the price of Xbox LIVE subscriptions would effectively double in time.

Curiously, he responded by saying "I don't foresee a scenario where we're going to double the price of LIVE anytime in the next couple months." Which is foreboding, as Pachter was speaking in terms of years, not months.

Who Knows maybe we'll see in January.
