Xeon W3520 3845A935 - DFI UT X58-T3EH8

Thanks for that info Flexion, seems we've kicked around here approx. the same length of time ! Good info on the DFI, I have never owned one, but when I was searching for a mobo to break 220+ bclk, I was looking at theirs and the classified, in Canada the classified showed up first. Interesting to know about Oscar Wu, before this I was mainly using Abit and Asus, with Abit being my favorite o-clocking boards. It's good to know that DFI has their primary engineer over there.

From one of his auctions: "The C0 Stepping has known issues and the new D0 Stepping has eliminated those."

What is he talking about?

I have not heard of any issues from them; not sure why; I hear he gets them direct from Intel.
I was also trying to say that he has the xeons listed now. and is selling the 3845A935 which is supposed to be a good batch

Waves at Kyle :D

EVGA Classified without sub zero testing would be a crime as that's what the board is built for. Just remember to insulate the dimm slots as a few folks have killed quite a quantity of memory on EVGA Classified under extreme sub zero cooling :)

Roger that. Will have plenty of eraser packed around them.

Yes and that's why I've been reading [H] since you guys were selling "Frag" tape mailed out in white envelopes! Been with you guys since the Celeron 300A days. Even had a different forum account but lost the ability to recover the password when I graduated college. hahaha...

I pay little attention to the LN2 OCs. Heck, I'm almost too lazy to watercool anymore, but I may need to for this CPU. It just seems like the i920 is too hot at 4.0GHz for everyday even at low volts.

I'm not a DFI fanboy and build using other brands for specific purposes. I always really like Gigabytes, but they end up failing on me. Strange huh? Given how I've posted with my last few builds being DFI you'd think I work for them, but I don't. They work for me, but my Asus tend to be more feature rich and stable for my "workstation" computers.

For what it's worth DFI does have Oscar Wu working for them. He's the "legendary" engineer that designed all of the OC'ing boards that Abit was famous for. Abit pretty much went downhill after he left and went to work for DFI.

hehe, Frag Tape. Great stuff. Paid the bills for a while.

Oscar. First time I met him was in 1998 IIRC at the ABIT FAE and he was in his pajamas. He used to sleep there. Was like 16 years old working 24/7. Great engineer.

I say that is a very good batch

Loving this DFI UT X58-T3EH8 + W3520 + Corsair Dominator GT 2000C7 combination even more. How's Uncore frequency @4600Mhz with QPI frequency @4140Mhz with 230bclk straight boot from bios for Super Pi 32M and 3dmark06 on water cooled cpu!

  • Uncore Frequency = 4600Mhz

Wow Eva2000!!!

I'm itchin' to take your advice on going caseless. But have curious chihuahuas in the house. hahaha... Hate to have one lose a leg or something in my 80 CFM fans. hahaha... A visit to the vet buys me a new rig here in the USA.

:D

Since my I've gone LGA775 and up I've always setup a 3 drive raid 0, because I found that my storage was the weakest link. Leaving that out in the open makes me cringe. hahaha...

Make a custom box/card board with protective grills/mesh to enclose board hehe

Max Bclk Validation
So far 235bclk is max for validation. Messing with voltages to see if I can get more :)

Folks running this DFI board. I found that updating my bios to 5/09 did me good for OC'ing. Same crappy cooling (mini atx tower) with 450 watt PSU allowed me to boot vista at 4.0Ghz!

After reaching the Holy Grail, peace and calm came to me, and proceeded to then go to sleep.

If I get my rig stable I'll post some real results.

BTW, I know to hook this rig up to a real PSU. Borrowing my wife's case and psu for the moment. Have the i7 hooked up to a 7800gtx. talk about a mismatch. hehehehe...

But yeah update that bios!

Very nice results EVA!
thanks!

wow 450w psu to clock i7 cpu to 4ghz... now that's balls for ya hehe

Grab a nice corsair HX-850 should be best balance for 2 card GPU config if in future you want it and for clocking cpu should be okay. FYI at w3520 @4.5ghz with 2x hd4870x2 cf @860/2000 my wattage meter reports around 890-930 watts being pulled from the wall at peak loads so at around 80% efficiency you looking at 712-744 watts being pulled from system.

Now that I started testing my uncore frequency overhead on W3520, thought I'd see how far I can push it on regular water cooling.

Dropped bclk to 210-214 and bumped uncore multiplier from 16x default with 8x mem multiplier, to 22x uncore multiplier and managed to push it to @4663Mhz uncore frequency Super Pi 32M stable, @4707Mhz for 4M stable and Everest and screenshot @4760Mhz uncore frequency !!!! Had to jack up both CPU VTT and VDIMM voltage to reach such uncore frequencies :)

Uncore frequency = 4663.5Mhz

Thanks for the advice. That's alot of watts bro! I've got a Silverstone 700w single rail sitting around and I don't do SLI or CF yet. That PSU is rated at 58A on the 12V. You're using a single rail too right?

The 450 watt is a corsair HX with a single rail rated at 33A on the 12V, when lazy rigging this system (believing that my case would come next week) I knew this PSU could at least handle 1 ide drive and 1 video card along with the i7 running stock. I had no idea it would even OC to 4GHz! hahaha... I'm pretty sure that the BSODs i'm getting when I start OCCT'ing are PSU related, because the integrated PSU fan is running at full blast crying for help!

Well, it looks like I'm not getting that case now. Gonna go for something else, I saw the Silverstone Raven 2 and Fortress 2 from Computex and they both look great. Time to gut out my previous system and start OC'ing in that.

It would have truly been an engineering feat to accomplish 4.0GHz using an Ultra 450Watt PSU or crappy like that. But with a 33A 12V rail on the Corsair it's not too much of a stretch.

Haven't shown this proc high volts yet. Because I know the PSU can't handle it. Thanks for the info regarding the draw from socket! I may go SLI or CF sometime. But I have to figure out if I have to Watercool this CPU first. Until then it'll be an 8800GT or 9600GT going into this rig.

Glad i could help :) the HX850 is single rail can't remember off top of my head what rating though. I'm using Silverstone OP1200 in above system in this thread single rail 90A rated :)

Ah i have the VX 450w corsair psu too in my HTPC build http://i4memory.com/f15/htpc-build-e6750-ga-g33m-d2sr-matx-hd3650-vx450-lian-li-pc-v350b-8510/ :D

Pushed the system a bit higher for wPrime v1.55 from 4500mhz to 4600+mhz but used Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit SP2. Limited by water cooling seems as 1024M @4664Mhz fails around 77% mark into the run :(
