A client's son tanked the hell out of his PC. A field day for virii. So, after cleaning the crap out, IE7 is throwing a "cannot display the webpage" error.

I've run the "Network Diagnostics for Windows XP " and here's the result:

Yes, the test log says "Good to Go!":

Yet, the real test - Can I get to www.microsoft.com - Fails.

What I've done so far:

  • I've cleared the browser cache
  • Used HijackThis to remove any obvious BHO's
  • Reset Internet Explorer Settings - usually one of the last things to do.

  • Malwarebytes can phone home and download updates
  • Avast Antivirus can phone home and download updates

  • Mcafee was installed - removed that.
  • Removed some Verizon crapplication that seemed to be gumming up the works.
  • Removed WildTangent itshay
  • more to follow.

I hope someone out there can shed some light on this, as I'm coming close to reinstalling the %$#@*ing OS. Any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated.

My friend had a similar issue the other day, and I messed with it for about 15 minutes and decided to just restore the PC.
Mozilla and Ad-aware also couldn't see the internet on his machine.

Just installed Firefox. I can get to Google.com, CNN.com, and Microsoft.com.

Any other ideas?

Remove IE via the add/remove components route, then reinstall 7 via the full package from microsoft.com via Firefox or a USB drive?
