well recently browsing this forum has gotten me motived to upgrade to a more custom solution than my z2300s... this is what i have access to and plan on purchasing within the next few days:

receiver: (likely to change)
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR502-theater-receiver-Digital/dp/B000233T80

1: center:
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Synergy-SC-1-Channel-Speaker/dp/B000BW3A7C

2 fronts: (i have these already)
http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Wall-Mount-Spkr-Charcoal/dp/B000MWA1Z0

sub:
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-KSW-10-10-Inch-Subwoofer-Black/dp/B0009CDYF2

firstly... is this a strange configuration (3.1) or am i just shorting myself the surrond sound (which i dont want anway)

also... my pc has a xtrememusic sound card... i will be connecting a newer hdmi receiver of some sort, how would i do this without losing any features?
would this attachment do the trick or should i look into a different card? http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=879&product=1780&listby=

http://forums.hardwaresecrets.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24&d=1184611637

what other cables/etc am i likely to need in order to complete my setup?

You can use all the effects (CMSS/EAX/etc) regardless of whether you use the digital or analog out to connect to the receiver.

If your receiver has coaxial digital input all you need is a mini-stereo to RCA cable:

The stereo plug goes into the digital out on the X-Fi and the white (left channel) plug goes into the digital coaxial input on the receiver.

I believe you'll also need the dolby digital out connect pack, otherwise you'll only get two channels out over the digital connector. Its essentially a $5 license fee:

this.
the Creative cable you linked is going to do the same thing suggested, it just provides an optical input/output as well (if you need that, buy their cable)

XtremeMusic does require the DDL/DTS connect software as it doesn't come with the licence from Creative

3.1 sound is...interesting, to say the least
its not standard, if thats what you're meaning, but it'll work just fine if you've got Pro Logic or similar somewhere in the chain

great!

i now have the ksw-10... its an active sub with speaker inputs... could i connect the speakers to the sub and hook the miniport to rca cable into the xfi and have some reasonable performance or is it absolutely necessary to use a receiver

you can't connect it as you wanted, you need an amplifier of some sort for the speakers to use those speaker level inputs

I am running a 3.0 setup with an xtremegamer using optical out to a Denon 1610. It works pretty well. With either prologic or DTS Neo upmixing, the surround channel plays through the front left or right speakers. I don't find it unusual at all.

for testing purposes i connected one of my infinity satellites to the receiver front left input and connect the mini to rca to the digital out on my sound card and put the white rca in the digital coax input on the receiver. i purchased and installed the $5 DTS pack and have my receiver in DVD (digital coax) input mode and i am not getting any sound, what am i missing?

Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar by the clock
Click "Playback Devices"
Double Click "Speakers" to open the speakers properties window
One of the tabs (Custom, IIRC) should have a checkbox to "enable digital IO"

Once that's enabled you should get digital output.

alright im all setup. im using a sony dtg510 receiver connected to the xtrememusic with the rca to ministereo

what sound mode in windows should i be using? speaker works and has all the options, spdif out works with few options, digital audio (s/spif) doesnt work at all

using the 'speaker' default device ive messed around with the settings abit and it doesnt sound 100% right to me... any suggestions on how to configure a setup like this?

For some reason you're supposed to use the "speakers" option regardless of whether you're using analog or digital out.

As for why it sounds weird, is CMSS-3D on? Open the Creative Control Panel application and turn off CMSS/crystalizer/any active EAX effects.

ah there was a EAX effect enabled by default, thanks for the info. any need to use an encoder, seems i have dolby live and DTS connect to choose from.

also im using a klipsch ksw-10 with sony dg-510 receiver and even after messing around with the bass balance on the tone tab i feel like the sub is still under performing. i have it sub connected to the receiver with a regular red/white rca to rca with the white plug into the subwoofer input on the receiver, could that be the issue?

I believe you'll need to enable DTS Connect to get multiple channels into the reciever, unless the receiver already shows that its getting specific left/right/center data.

As long as the low frequency effects signal is getting from the receiver to the sub it shouldn't matter. There should be some options in the receiver for bumping up the sub-woofer level.

oh yea

$75 - Sony DG510 Receiver
$30 - 2x Infinity TSS-SAT800
$90 - Klipsch KSW-10
$5 - Stereo to RCA

$200 flat for my new setup... not too shabby. going to keep my eyes for some nice towers and a center next.

thanks for all the help

aww great... i was seeing just how hard this sub would 'boom' and the led on the front has shutoff and it will not come back on. i took a look at the fuse and the coil inside seems to be intact but the glass is abit smokey/cloudy. any ideas?
