For those using Xvid to store movies on their servers, what settings do you use? I have started out using autogk and set it to 100% quality, and it is quite watchable. It isn't quite what uncompressed vob's look like, but certainly close enough for starters. Is there a way to squeeze a little more out of xvid? I have been using the cccp codec pack as my default and was wondering what ffdshow settings would be best for xvid. I only have about 400gb of storage for movies and anime and don't want to have to add harddrives if possible (a terabyte nas is a on the dream list, but having just bought a townhome, play money is tight).

Would people even still recommend xvid? xvid will play on my creative zen vision:m so it is nice to be able to have one copy of a movie for multiple uses. Thanks all.

I compress mine alot more and I also use autogk. I use custom size settings. I usually guestimate on the size. A movie that is only about an hour and a half comedy or something I make it about 780megs. An action movie about the same length I will make about 900. A long movie with alot of quality I will go up towards 1.8gig per movie. I use a 400gig HD with a 300gig partition and I have over 400 movies on the 300gig partition. There might be 1 or 2 movies that you will see a small bit of degradation but not enough to cry over. Most of my movies you would never guess its not a DVD.
When using autogk, the quality settings are single pass encoding, custom size settings are dual pass encoding and you will get better quality from what I have seen.

I used to use AutoGK at 100% Quality but, as you mentioned, there is a quality hit, even at 100%. I've recently switched to MeGUI and x264. If I run "Const Quality" at "15" I end up with a file about the same size as an XviD @ 100% but with much better image quality.

Yup, exactly what occidio said. You are better off selecting a custom size rather than a % of quality. I do mine slightly higher quality than occidio, but I also have more hdd space. But I do all my 2 hours or less movies to 1.4GB, and 2+ to about 2.1GB. I always keep the original audio since I run it through my stereo.

What build are you guys using of AutoGK? Every time I have tried to do custom size, once the second pass begins I will get some error and it will shutdown. No problems using percentage of original. I have whatever is the latest build is from the autogk website. Thanks. (I am using Xvid, shooting for 2100mb for a 2 hour movie, original audio).

I use Nero Recode to encode to AVC. I usually just like to keep the bitrate constant, I dont care that much about file size, as everything is stored on a NAS.

What bitrate are you using? Curious after messing with meGUI and nero recode last night.

i think i used 1.0 mbps on Casino last night, looked pretty good. I havent tried MeGUI because AnyDVD + Nero Recode 2 is so much easier, at least to me.

staxrip

xvid/matroska

1/3 DVD ~ 1,450MB = typical for a 90 min film

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't using Nero Recode 2 also make it much easier to burn a ripped movie back to DVD? ( When using Nero to burn )
