Okay I have about an $1100 budget. This computer will be used for gaming, surfing the internet, some photoshopping, watching videos, etc. I need to be able to store a lot of stuff so thats why I have a 1 TB HDD, so here it goes. My monitor's native res is 1152 x 864. I want to be able to burn DVDs, anybody got some reccomendations. I don't know any of the good ones so I just put in a generic DVD Drive.
Cooler Master RC-690 KKNI-GP Black SECC/ABS ATX Mid Tower Case
Western Digital Cavair Black WD1001Fals 1TB 7200 RPM Sata 3.0GB/s HD
EVGA 896 P3-1260 AR GeForce GTX 260 896 MB
Asus Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model
PC Power & Cooling 610 Watt PSU
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) 240 Pin DDR2 RAM
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield @ 2.4 ghz
Adds up to be $992.92
+ tax (California is a bitch) $66.91
+ shipping
=$1,017.07
Seem like a good build? I chose the coolermaster case because I want an easy, accesible case. This is my first build so I want it to go really smooth :D

The GTX 260 is /massive/ overkill for your native resolution -- you'd be fine with a 9800GT or Radeon HD 4850. That said, with the 260 you'd never even have to consider turning down setting and could run some serious AA without issue.

The 610 watt is more than you need, and there are all kinds of great PSU deals going on lately. If you're spending more than about $60 on it, look elsewhere. Corsair, Silverstone, Antec (Earthwatts), Seasonic.

with a $1100 budget, you should upgrade that low resolution monitor. $1100 you can easily include a 22" (1680 x 1050) monitor in the build.

I agree, HG should show you a build with a monitor in it, and you should buy it. s-c is right, both of those parts are overkill. I'm sure HG's build will have more bang for buck selections.

Well, my recommendation would be to get a DVD burner, instead of a DVD ROM. :p

$25 - SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223F

Yeah I just put the default one in there :p. And TBH, I kinda like this monitor's res, and it has to do with size. I don't have a lot of space on this desk. And I want to be able to keep this thing for like 3 years, and be able to run most games (mostly the Total War games, willing to turn down settings on FPS').
And I just went with the PC Power & Cooling 610 Watt PSU because A) I couldn't go wrong and B) I thought that I would need 610 Watts with that video card.

Any more comments? I'm sorry for the impatience but I haven't really made a purchase like this and I want to be sure I am getting the best stuff that fits my budget.

Gimme a sec while I work up a build

EDIT: NVM

If you're fine with the fact the video card is completely overkill and like your smaller monitor, then your build is good.

Your build looks pretty good. But, overall, you can't really enjoy gaming and photo editing on 1152 x 864. So.. I revised your build to tailor it close to your budget. Yes, there is cheaper 22" lcds. But, this Samsung 2253BW is a well rounded solid monitor that will not dissappoint. As far as the Q6600 cpu, I don't think you will suffer much by not going with it. Plus, it has been hovering at $190 price for soo long. I don't see it much a deal as the Core 2 E8400 for $165. Plenty cpu power already and more than enough for your needs. The HD 4850 will do fine for gaming at 1680 x 1050 res. I feel that this is a more well rounded balanced system for your money.

nice build HG, but I did not see where he said he needs on os. If thats the case then maybe he should opt for the gtx 260?

That Sapphire was $150 a while ago now it's at $160 and no free shipping. If he does not need O/S, he should get the EVGA Geforce GTX 260 w/free shipping for $220

so whats the performance difference between 192 and 216 processing cores? The 216 version is $247

22" (1680 x 1050) just get the 192 stream processor and save the $27. Use the $27 to buy a game.

Okay so I went with
Q6600
EVGA 9800 GTX
G Skill DDR2 4 GB (2x2GB)
PC Power & Cooling 610 Watt PSU
Samsung DVD Burner
WD 640 GB HD
Coolermaster 690
Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
Okay so I am having some problems. I put everything together, but when I turned it on, I wouldn't get any beeps, no video signal. I have the video card in. All of the PHASE LEDs were lighting up. Some people have had this problem, and my brother broke the SATA cable when we were building it, so I think thats it but I still think I would've gotten a video signal. I think the motherboard has onboard audio, I thought all modern motherboards did. So I shouldn't need a case speaker, any suggestions? I'm going to pick up a new SATA cable. Also, a couple other short questions:
1. Do I plug in both ATX pins? Or just one?
2. What is the F Audio plugs? Do I need them if I want onboard audio?

1) You plug in both the 24Pin motherboard and 8Pin CPU connector.
2) That's for Front Panel Audio. Like the audio plugs in the front of your case. You will need to connect the F Audio plugs to your motherboard if you want to be use the audio plugs in front of your case.
3) Read the basic troubleshooting sticky to get your system to POST.

Thanks, and I have its just there have been some specific problems with the EP45-UD3R (2GB sticks not working, using smaller sticks then upping the voltage, etc.) Thanks, but for what about the SATA cable? Does it have to be plugged in for my system to post?

Thanks. It must've been the video card or something, I thought I put it in correctly. I'll put it back together tomorrow, thanks Danny Bui for all of the help.

I took pictures of the parts, but my C5280 (printer) won't recognize the SD card. I'll get a new one, and I'll take a picture of the whole PC.
