Well, I know tons of these get posted all the time, but what the hell, I'll post one too.

My goal with this build was to make the nicest thing I could without breaking the bank. I tried to choose most of the components so I will have future room for upgrading. Also, I plan on overclocking the CPU.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHZ $218.99
ASUS P5B Deluxe $213.98
Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB 2X1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-12 $324.98
BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC PCI-E 256MB $179.99
Fortron Sparkle FSP/SPI ATX-400PN 400W ATX12V 20/24PIN Power Supply W/ 120MM Fan $45.15
Antec Solo $98.77
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB $109.98
LG GSA-H22N DVD+RW 18X8X16 DVD-RW 18X6X16 Dual Layer 8X DVD-RAM 12X DVD Writer 2MB Black OEM $36.98

Subtotal $1,228.82 (all prices in Canadian currency)

The GFX card comes with a $50 MIR and the ram comes with a $40 MIR (not counted in the prices above)

I plan on getting a new keyboard, mouse, monitor, and HSF after Christmas. Other than that, any input?

I'd go with cheaper ram and a better PSU. This OCZ has better timing than the Corsair's CL5.

$210 - G.SKILL 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
$220 - OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 OCZ2P800R22GK ($250 - $30MIR)

$180 - Corsair HX620w 620W
$105 - OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W ($120 - $15MIR)
$145 - SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V 600W
$130 - Corsair HX520w 520W
$120 - SeaSonic S12-500 ATX12V 500W

Few tips ive learned.

If your going for mainly performance:

Cheaper case = better (decent brands with good airflow can be found for 50 or so)
The gfx card can be found on newegg for 113 after rebate
Any reason for such a big hd?
Most gamers that dl some music and pictures and videos dont use (im gonna guess) 120gb. I have a couple hundred songs, few games and pics and a couple dvds and i havt used but 10% of my 120gb

PSU go for Antec, Enermax, OCZ and other name brands on the good psu list in psu forums.

I would recommend the Corsair HX520 PSU or HX620. Other than that, you are good to go. Just remember to send in the rebate for the 7600GT.

where are you buying this? is saw the e6300 for $189 or something like that on newegg braaaaaaa

First of all, I appreciate all the input.

As far as all the Newegg links go, thanks, but I live in Canada. Newegg doesn't ship to Canada, and even if they did, customs fees would kill me.

My ram choice is based on the fact that I plan on overclocking the e6300, hopefully above 3GHz. It seemed like most people were having great success with this ram.

The HD choice is basically done, as far as size goes at least, although I am open to other models or manufacturers. With dual-booting, music, and uh torrenting, the 320 gigs will be gone in no time :p

Lots of people are mentioning the PSU though, and although I realize that the one I chose isn't the best, I am wondering what causes you to recommend something different? Is 400watts not enough? Or is it more of a voltage stability thing?

Thanks

Oh yeah, I'm going for silence, thats why I chose the case. Also, I just love the design ;)

Yeah, well $189 US = $215 Canadian. So thats the same as what I'm paying. :)

The 2 things that I see are: the BFG TECH 7600GT 256mb is on sale at newegg for $113.99 after MIR. Also, I'm not sure if this is the same motherboard as yours, but it seems like it would be. Asus P5B Deluxe. It is $182.99.

Just thought I would try to save you a few bucks.

I appreciate the input, but again, ordering from Newegg is not an option, they simply do NOT ship to Canada, and even if they did customs would make then more expensive than NCIX. $182.99 US is only $5 cheaper than $213.98 Canadian.

Really, NCIX is Canada's Newegg.

Though I linked to NewEgg, NCIX carries most of the same products I recommended. Here, this time they're linked to NCIX, and prices are in CAD, lol.

G.Skill and OCZ.Platinum will work just as fine. In fact, the OCZ Plats have lower latency than the Corsairs you chose. Too bad NCIX charges more for them than the Corsairs, unlike NewEgg. For the same latency as the Corsairs, I'd go with the G.Skill kit since its alot cheaper. If you want better latency, go with the OCZ Platinum sticks for only $10 more:

$290 - G.SKILL F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-15
$336 - OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 ($366 - $30MIR)

Well, you'll want more power for a better OC and a future vidcard upgrade. I'd suggest at least a 450W. And since you want silence, I'd also suggest Seasonic:
$170 - Seasonic S12-600HT 600W ATX12V 20/24 Pin V2.0 Active PFC
$120 - Seasonic S12-500HT 500W ATX12V 20/24 Pin V2.0 Active PFC

Oh, and these are cheaper than the BFG, if you were lookin to save a few bux (literally):

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=222253689&vpn=256-P2-N612-TX&manufacture=eVGA
I'm not sure about BFG's warranty policy, but I like eVGA because they still warrant their cards even if you switch out the stock GPU Cooler (HSF), you know, in case you wanted a more quiet cooling solution.

Thanks enginurd, I'm defiantly going to have to put a lot of thought into my ram and psu choices now before I order. As for the graphics card, I should have mentioned the reason for my choice: I was initially going for the eVGA, however recently switched to the BFG simply because I realized I might need the dual-dvi.

Oh, while browsing NCIX I found one other ram choice I would like your opinion on.

You recommended This. But what about this? I realize the first revision doesn't have the same timings as the 2nd rev, but would it still be better than the G.Skill or Corsiar?

Thanks again

Wow, nice price on those rev1s. I believe rev2 can OC higher. However, how far do you plan to OC your CPU? I'd stick with the G.Skills or the rev1 because of their price. Its not really worth paying extra for lower latency (which is why I said its too bad ncix charges more for rev2 than the corsairs, because its the opposite at newegg, which was my reason for recommending them, lol). You could easily reach 2.8Ghz with whichever of those kits you choose (7*400=2.8Ghz).

Honestly, latency is pretty much useless. The only real advantage is that sometimes you can raise timings and extract more speed out of the memory.
Its not so much useless with DDR, though still useless to the avg consumer. The higher speed of DDR2 not only compensates for the high latency, but renders low latency even more useless. Though, when comparing memory, its nice to factor in other attributes than just speed. Also, yes, the lower the stock latency, the more headroom you have for overclocking (by loosening the timings like Casull said).

My suggestion about the OCZ Plats was simply because it was cheaper than the corsairs, and the lower latency is just an added bonus.

the ram looks a bit expensive but other than that i think you picked some good parts :D

you might want to look into a bigger PSU if theres a possibility that you will upgrade the video card to something beefier. something in the 500watt range at least.

On the NCIX forum messages on the product page for the rev1 platinums some people were reporting they could get them to run at 433MHz on 4-4-4-15 timings at 2.0 volts. Even if this is slightly exaggerated, the rev1 sounds like one hell of a deal. I think I will get the rev1 platinums.

(I am hoping for an overclock ≥ 3.0 GHz)

Now I just have to decide on a new PSU.

Well, I think I'm done.

Ignore that $0.00 for shipping insurance, I am getting shipping insurance, my excel file just broke or something...
