A new study says your toddler is more likely to learn tech skills than important life skills. One statistic, I'm not kidding, said that more kids could open a web browser than swim unaided. Gee, ya think?

Small children today are more likely to navigate with a mouse, play a computer game and increasingly – operate a smartphone – than swim, tie their shoelaces or make their own breakfast. This is according to a new ‘Digital Diaries’ study from Internet Security Company AVG (www.avg.com). AVG Digital Diaries is a series of studies looking at how children's interaction with technology has changed.

yeah kids learning tech skills while our enemies are teaching their kids life skills, working skills, and how to handle weapons. No wonder kids are fatties now days.

Opening a browser rather then knowing how to swim.

That's like comparing the ability to open a car door to driving a car.

Not my RIGHT HAND!!!!!!

But, since I've seen this movie I learned one vital thing. Do not put your hand on wall when asked too.......

Hey i learned the big book of DOS before i could even tie my shoes. Unfortunately only one of those two things proved useful in the future.

this just in, more kids can do easier tasks than hard

+1 this. No surprise here. My 2 year old can operate my smart phone (navigate the YouTube application and load his learning games) but can't zip his own coat or isn't potty trained.

Stupid article. Look today how many people don't know how to swim and swimming is not a life skill, it also has nothing to do with tech.

This is an uninformative article, and a study was not necessary to deduce these findings. Kids emulate their parents, parents have laptops, smartphones, etc. They want to push the buttons and play with the same toys as mom and dad. Of course they will pick this stuff up quickly. They can push buttons and click a mouse, before having the dexterity to tie shoes.

Tech skills are life skills.

Agree totally.

Moving a mouse to open a browser is no more difficult than other recognition activities a young child would do, and not a whole lot different. Tying shoe laces is a lot harder than clicking an icon, because it requires more motor skills, coordination, and pattern memorization.

How is this study remotely noteworthy?

How exactly are tech skills not life skills. they're perfectly appropriate life skills for the modern era. this would be like an article in 1832 ranting kids learn plow skills before life skills. what othes life skills are as universally important as tech skills in this modern era? most everything else is specialised and majority of people don't require the same skill set as previous generations. what is it with these luddites bashing technology at every turn? if you alienate kids from technology just see how poorly they cope with life.

"The enemy cannot push a button if you disable his hand."

Love that movie.

Love that movie too, though it slanders the book's good name.

I agree that opening a browser vs swimming is kinda out there. Swimming is a learned skill. I'd be more distressed if this was open a browser before learning to walk or talk.
