A friend always hits me up for technical advice, and she asked me today about wanting to buy a TV for her bedroom that can also serve as an external monitor for her laptop.
I should stress the TV aspect. She wants to be able to plug it into a cable box, DVD player, use a remote, etc, like...
I have quite a lot of free time at work, and would like to be able to log into my home computer remotely to work on programming. I've asked the higher ups, and they've given me the "go ahead". I can use Windows RDC out, or any other solution that doesn't involve installing programs on my...
Upgrading from Vista x64.
Turns out I accidentally installed the 32-bit version of Windows 7. I decided to take off and nuke it from orbit. Wiped the drive to DoD specs, then installed the correct version of Windows 7. Used ninite to reinstall most of my basic programs, updated my drivers...
(Yep. Should have done more research before I tried this method).
I just installed a clean (non-upgrade) version of Windows 7 on my home machine. I had two drives that were 80-90% full, so I borrowed a drive from work and cloned my primary drive (:C)to that drive (:K). I was thinking I'd...
It was decent, but it ended at 8am EST.
I think the UR55s were $35, sale price.
Unfortunately I was at work until 6am (the joy of being a jr sysadmin), and my gift cards were at home. I forgot to order when I got home. :(
For $35, I might just snag these JVC HARX700s off Amazon...
I need a second set of headphones for work.
Currently rocking some old Koss SB-40s, which I bought 3-4 years ago off a recommendation on here. (Is Spaceman still around?) I'd like to swap them out for something newer. This is primarily for listening to Pandora while performing boring...
Thanks for posting that! I'll look into them.
I'm surprised people think the hard drive will make such a difference. Is the 64gb drive worth it at all? I could at least run the OS, a few games, and select programs off it.
What do you mean?
I've been out of the computer hardware scene for...
Thanks for the detailed post, Cyclone! Some of your suggestions were new to me. Some I do already.
~65. Only things eating CPU cycles are firefox and dropbox.
SmartDefrag runs once every two weeks. Two drives. Both defragged on the 9th of this month. Ran it again last night just for...
Newegg is having a sale on RAM. Any reason I can't mix and match the following two?
2x2gb DDR 2 1000
CAS Latency: 5
Timing: 5-5-5-15
Voltage: 2.0-2.1V
2x1gb DDR 800
CAS Latency: 5
Timing: 5-5-5-15
Voltage: 1.8-2.0V
I can only buy the top in 4gb lots, for about $80 shipped. 2gb...
$400 is a serious outer limit. I'd be much more comfortable around $200, +/- $50 and further complicated by the fact that I have $75 in gift cards to Best Buy that have been sitting around for months. I never shop there, and can't imagine what else to spend them on.
I've got a 2+ year old rig that's starting to bog down. I'd like to put $200-400 into it to increase performance as much as possible to carry me through the end of the year. At which point I will probably convert this rig into a media center PC and retire it to the living room.
I'm hoping the...
I forwarded her this thread earlier today. Thanks for your feedback!
Danny, you've been here for ages, man! You post a lot, too. I remember you helping me out with my posts for my first solo build, two years ago.
In case nobody else has said it recently, thank you for all the good advice...
She might be able to get them through the College of Engineering.
She's a PhD student in our University's Modeling and Sim program. Up from an organizational psychology background, so pretty computer illiterate, but I believe that program is under the umbrella of the College of Engineering...
My friend sent me a link to an E-machines deal at CompUSA. She's on the market, and is feeling pressured to run out and buy it before the sale ends.
CompUSA's E-machines Deal
I'm looking to beat this deal from an online retailer in either parts I build myself, or a similar boxed deal for...
