    OEM xp from Newegg

I bought OEM XP Pro from NewEgg a few weeks ago (I'm not ready to buy in to Vista, heck, I was running Win2K until a few weeks ago). It comes with a Certificate of Authencity (COA) sticker that you're supposed to attach to the PC box, and the install CD. No worries. It installs and activates...

What RAM for a Bad Axe 2 + E6600 build?

I'm running Crucial Ballistix DDR-1000 in my BX2 / e6600. Only a mild overclock (at 3.0GHz), but it has my RAM at 500MHz with the DDR-800 setting in the BIOS. Runs well... I have it at 2.0V RAM, but it'll run at 1.84 volts at that speed with 5-5-5-18 (default BIOS) settings.

How far has virtualization technology gone?

To be honest, I haven't seen what VT in the CPU has "bought me". I run VMWare Server VMs in a P4 3.2GHz machine at work, and a VM in my e6600 at home. I don't see a whole lot of difference in VM "quality of running". Everything seems to be appropriately responsive, but it's not like the 6600...

    Linux Wireless >:o

I spent about 8 hours trying to get Linux going on that PC. First, the ATI Rage128 card didn't work (locked up during Ubuntu Edgy install, right as graphics kicked in). OK, so I replaced that with an nVidia 5200... Next, the sound card didn't work right... I use Pandora for music, and...

    Linux Wireless >:o

I'd think there would be an inf file on the support web site, bundled in with the windows drivers for the wireless adapter. Your experience sounds much like mine... but I did have an inf... and never did get it working with my Trendnet USB wireless adapter. Had to throw in the towel on that...

    Mythdora 4.0 Install troubles

I just loaded MythDora 4.0 on my dedicated MythTV system this weekend. Runs great. Nice upgrade from 3.2. I use a cheap Chaintech Nvidia FX5200 AGP card. It gets a little hot, that's my only complaint. I had to put a fan on it (it was fanless). Around $35 at NewEgg. I tried originally to...

Difference between XP home and pro versions

I found VPC2007 killed one of my critical apps (a monitoring system that maintains constant connection with a server). VPC killed the connection and I no longer got real time updates (errr, or any updates at all). Innotek's VirtualBox and VMWare Server both work just fine on the same machine...

What causes with with wireless network (screenshot)

My GE cordless phone kills our wireless. My wife kept calling me, "my computer connection is down".... only for it to start later. You on the phone - or someone near you have a 2.4GHz phone?

    Resoltuion and Nvidia Driver question

you need to go in to xorg.conf and put "1280x1024" in front of all of the lines for the monitor settings. There's about 6 of them. I think you should be able to do this: Fire up a terminal cd /etc/X11 sudo gedit xorg.conf (type in your password) Now edit the file - add "1280x1024" to...

Difference between XP home and pro versions

I had to look in to it (as I've never used it), but Remote Assistance is what's available in Messenger. The user has to initiate a Remote Assistance request to the 'expert', and then the 'expert' can get access to the machine. It uses Remote Desktop technology, but isn't quite the same thing...

Difference between XP home and pro versions

Remote Desktop and IIS are biggies for me, and they're only in Pro. VMWare Server (the free edition) requires IIS. Allows me to have my Linux virtual machine for linux oriented utilities. Remote Desktop works much better than VNC - it's much smoother. TightVNC works, but it's clunky at times.

    klipsch 5.1 speakers?

I went through 2 sets of the 5.1's in under a month. Amp died on both of them. This was in 2005. Went to a Pioneer receiver (with SPDIF) / JBL speaker setup, happy ever since. At work I have a 2.1 setup that I got on ebay for 15 bucks - the connector was broken that plugs the satellites in...

    Vista: No RDC without Ultimate?

Yep, even my Win2K box at home has Remote Desktop Connection software, so I can remote in to my XP machine at work. I got it off the Microsoft web site. But Vista Home (or XP Home, or Win2K) does not support the other way around - can't remote desktop in to a VH machine. Then again, that's...

    XP VPN

How is 5.x on the same net as 3.x with a 255.0 mask? ;) I kludged my way around this by using VMWare, creating an XP virtual machine on my PC, and installing the VPN software on the XP irtual machine. This way, the virtual machine has access and is connected to the remote VPN, but my machine...

    A quiet one?

I never have looked, but I wonder if my HX520 fan is even running. ;) I have 4 fans (one in the HX520, and 3 Yate Loon 120mm), and 3 hard drives... and could not imagine my PC being any quieter. I hear the hard drives over the fans, and that's only the light chucking during seeks. My ceiling...

    New to Linux...installing nvidia drivers?

I'm just trying to get him back to the graphical so he can redo his nvidia binaries. ;) I know about the nv drivers. He will need to go back to Synaptic Package Manager and remove the 9631 drivers and load the 9755s.

    New to Linux...installing nvidia drivers?

I had that same problem in Feisty (7.04). What happened was that the Kernel was loaded with the 9755 drivers, but X was trying to load 9631, thanks to the way Ubuntu configured itself. That's why X is crashing. If you scroll down, you'll see where the brackets on the left side of the screen...

    Hardware questions on Ubuntu 7.04

I'm pretty new at editing video / making DVDs from my home movies, but I was a bit disappointed in Linux software for said tasks. I have a Canon Elura 100, and my Linux PC has firewire on the motherboard, so that part was no problem. Kino was able to connect to my camera and I was able to...

    best TV tuner software?

I really like my MythTV... specifically, MythDora on my dedicated PVR box. Just a cheap little Sempron 2800 with a Happauge 150, but it works very well. I also tried KnoppMyth, but found MythDora much friendlier and more usable (on the 'innards' of the system). KnoppMyth had no web browser...

Best PSU for $75 or less

Yah, I saw that deal this morning and my jaw dropped. :D I bought my HX520 from Buy.com for $99.95, then a $10 rebate, then $10 instant off for Google Checkout... $79.95 (plus stamp) total. Works great. Still waiting on the rebate, but it's only been a couple of weeks. $70 would have been...

    Why get a HTPC?

My HTPC (Sempron 2800, 1GB, 250GB, 5200, blah blah) draws 75-80 watts while working, and slightly less (65-70) while idle (per the Kill-A-Watt meter). While not a 'huge' load, I do turn it off when not in use. I used a PIII-667, 512MB, 20GB as my Myth box for a while. It worked fine with the...

Should my PSU work without being plugged into a motherrboard? (Etasis 850)

You can use a paperclip to jumper the green wire to a black wire on the 20 (or 24) pin connector. That's what'll turn it on.

    Why get a HTPC?

Why? I had a leftover PC. Sempron 2800+, cheap ECS mini-ATX mobo, 250GB drive, 512MB RAM, with an ASUS DVD burner. I had put it together in a low profile Antec Minuet case. It's decently quiet. I bought a low profile Happauge 150 card, another 512MB RAM, and a cheap low profile nVidia 5200...

    Fun with static electricity

May sound a little weird, but you might think about your clothes. I have a pair of shoes that will help build static electricity... after killing an automotive computer with a static discharge, I have banned them from my office. LOL. I also have a few nice warm fuzzy shirts that build...

Can my FAR Ultra V-Series 500w handle this?

I have one of those FAR Ultra V power supplies. I'd love to see a good torture test on one. ;) Still waiting for my rebate check, it's only been 2 months though. LOL. Mine works. I originally bought it for my new PC build, but after I put it in the FAR Ultra case, I decided not to use them...

    Not using the 4-pin 12V cable for a P4?

The 4-pin connector is for the CPU. It won't come up without it. I tried that when I got my first 478 board as well... was trying to upgrade my son's PC from an Athlon 600 to a 2.93GHz Celeron board. Unfortunately, the 4-pin cable was missing from my 1990s-era power supply - and the board...

    Kill A Watt

I think the Kill A Watt is one of the coolest toys I've purchased. I bought 2 - one for work, one for home. Anyhow, I took some measurements last weekend when I was setting up my new computer. Help choosing a mobo for E6600

I just received the BX2/e6600 yesterday. Booted on the first try. Nice board. I'm not an oc expert. Standard disclaimers apply. But I am an internet expert :p , I've read a lot about this board. ;) Seems the BX2 front side bus runs out of poop at about 425-450 MHz. So if you have a lower...

Worth waiting for April price cuts?

I gave in. Tigerdirect has the Intel 975xbx2 mobo / OEM e6600 combo for $449 right now. Now I have something to mess with while I'm off work for a few days before April 22nd... Price on e6600 is supposed to drop to $225 (retail box), so yeah, I could have saved maybe $40-$50 by waiting a few...

    Badaxe2 Upgrade.

You can order the DFI 965-S direct from DFI right now. There are threads on other forums. They are shipping. $140+$15.50 or so for the first 40 boards, as I understand it... I was kicking around the same thing. DFI 965 versus BX2. I couldn't bring myself to buy any other 965 board, because of...

How to tell if panel is S-IPS? & HP LP2065 display lag results

I just recently got an LP2065 as well (that $40 MIR is nice). From all indications I've seen, it's S-IPS. It does cast a purplish glow from an extreme angle on a black background, and images don't wash out or look differently as you go across the monitor. I'm happy with it. Mine's a June 2006...
