    Headphone sound setup

What is your reference point, and what set your price range? Is it more of a ceiling? I can say from experience that even $50 headphones and a cheap card will give you a huge leap forward for games and rock from the headphones most people are used to. If you have a habit of upgrading in the...

    Headphone sound setup

Your DAC needs some sort of a digital signal. If it has USB as an option, then you would not need a soundcard. Otherwise you would need some form of soundcard that feeds it whatever digital input it takes (optical/coaxial).

    Headphone sound setup

If you're just using the soundcard with headphones or stereo speakers you should consider the DAC options in your price range, some have an amp packed with them as well. The DAC will also free you up to listen to other sources besides your desktop computer

    HD7770 on PCIe 1.0?

I have an older Dell that could use a new videocard for games and I had settled on the HD7770, but my motherboard only supports PCIe 1.0. I realize they are technically backward compatible, but I was wonder whether it would negate performance increases for gaming. Here is the mobo...

    Budget ZFS NAS Build

Have you done any measurements to see what your actual power usage is like? Is the heat output noticeable? It'd be nice if you could borrow a Kill-a-watt / Belkin Conserve Insight. It's always interesting to see the actual power usage

Make computer fully accessible over internet

I was unclear; the already installed multi-OS shouldn't matter much, I have it so I can read the ext3 partitions under windows now. The reason I threw out the idea of Ubuntu server is that I don't know the best way to get this going. A server OS seemed like a good possibility, and I am...

Make computer fully accessible over internet

I've spent a little more time looking into this but it is hard to test (I'm not on the FIOS network now). It looks like UltraVNC supports file transfers and encryption. Hopefully it is fast enough to use; I haven't tried it yet. Ext2 IFS ran into an error mounting my linux partitions because...

Make computer fully accessible over internet

Currently I have Orb set up and running, it works but isn't exactly snappy to stream files from. I can control my computer with logmeinfree, but that is pretty slow too. All I still need is a way to access all files. The ext2 ifs driver isn't reading my ext3 partitions correctly, it may be...

Make computer fully accessible over internet

I don't have any extra computers to set up, just the q6600 I can't use ddwrt; the modem/router are combined. What about freesshd and freeftpd? Could I then use ext2 ifs to access my linux (ext3) partitions from XP? http://www.freesshd.com http://www.fs-driver.org/ I should be the only user...

I have some concerns about running a full ftp server all the time (security) I think Ubuntu Server with Apache, no-ip, mysql, and kplaylist will get me access to everything. http://www.kplaylist.net/ http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html...

Make computer fully accessible over internet

It looks like I'm stuck with dynamic ip and no port 80... " Ports 80 and 135 are blocked inbound. However, although port 25 is not "blocked", Verizon's dynamic IP addresses are listed in the Spamhaus Policy Block List (PBL). The PBL is/can be used by mail exchange servers (MX's) to reject...

    Finalizing HTPC

I went with a PS3 mediaboard for $23....great range and battery life, built in touchpad. Only problem is that it doesn't have a windows key (I miss my shortcuts) I guess that leaves me needing just the IR

Make computer fully accessible over internet

This summer I'll be working in several different states, and I want to only bring my Lenovo S10 netbook with me. It has XP Home on it right now, and I'll probably put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on it soon (160gb HD, 2gb Ram) I'd like to be able to both control and have full access to the files on...

    Sub $700 Netbook

I decided to just spend a minimal amount of money, especially considering how quickly these things go out of date. I ordered the Lenovo S10 deal off of slickdeals. 330 for everything including a sleeve and taxes, with the 6cell battery. I've already ordered the internal bluetooth upgrade and...

    Sub $700 Netbook

I had actually been browsing the site. That 13" inspiron doesn't look too bad - can be decently configured for 700, without any sale going on. Cons are no dvi/hdmi out, 5lb + more to get decent battery life My Components Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) Genuine Windows...

    Sub $700 Netbook

I've seen these posts; also how Hulu doesn't work well at 480p because of flash. I want the output to my TV just as a monitor, not concerned with HD playback since I have the desktop and a bluray player (although it wouldn't hurt)

    Headphone Amp for HD-650
