I'm planning on putting together the below with a Intel Q9550s (waiting for it to be released) and will probably change the power supply to a PC P&C 420W unit. The question is, will this cooler fit this case? If not, can someone suggest an alternative?

I will also gladly take suggestions on any of the items I have picked out so far :)

Could anyone please recommend one that will fit and can achieve optimal cooling?

Remember, you don't need an aftermarket cooler, you can use the stock heatsink. Performance won't be stellar, but it should be adequate.
 
I have the Zalman CNPS7500 ALCu and it fits and works fine in my SG02B

Zalmans are shit and loud. The 8700NT though a good performer will be loud at 1400rpm and above which will happen most of the time (since it's 4pin variable). Just get the tried and true NT06.

Yeah. Zalman's idea of silence is pretty loud compared to Nexus or Noctua.
 
Yea, I think I'm leaning towards the NT06 now... Now to find a good power supply ~400W with a fan that will suck up the heat from it.
 
I use a Zalman 8700 to cool my 89W X2 3000+ in my SG01-E. The statements above are correct concerning the 8700's noise. At very low speed it is difficult to detect, but as soon as the load on the CPU increases and the fan spins up to compensate, it is rather loud and annoying. Unfortunately for me, my NT-06 Lite was unable to cool the processor so I hade to get an active, and loud, cooler. The NT-06E should perform better but it was not available when I upgraded my processor.
For the power supply, I still have the silverstone ST50EF Short Cable edition. It is designed with a big fan undernieth to accomodate an NT-06 Lite. Plus having short cables is the next best thing to a modular power supply. It is a 500W power supply, so a little more powerful than what you were considering and the fan in it truly is almost silent.
 
I like the power supply you recommended although it's a 500W unit. As the box is going to be on 24/7, power consumption is a concern. With it being a higher efficiency unit, just because its rated as 500W, doesn't necessarily mean that its going to be use that kind of potential power correct?

I guess I want to know if it will be as good in terms of power draw as a 400W unit, just because it has the ability to draw the 500W doesn't mean its actually going to right?

Actually in your case you will be much better off with a lower wattage PSU. Seeing that you won't be using a discrete GPU, your power requirements are going to be pretty low. Idle on my machine I'm around 120W at the wall socket. If we assume 80% efficiency that's about 25% usage for my Nexus 8040, and that's with a factory-OCed 8800GT GPU. You are gonna be running a quad so probably higher wattage than my OCed E8200 but you won't have the GPU. Plus your load wattage won't be that much higher (mainly your CPU drawing more, I'd guess something like my wattage at idle, maybe a bit more). So if you have a 400W PSU, you'll always stay below the 25-30% usage. PSUs usually reach their best efficiency around 50 to 60% load so going for a 500W PSU is not gonna help you IMO. But I guess that at this point it's pretty academic.

Another good reason for a lower wattage PSU is, the fan will spin faster because you're loading it more. If you use an NT-06, you want a quick-spinning fan for the best cooling.

Houston, we have lift off. To note, my "slow spinning" ST70F cools the NT06 perfectly fine even overclocked, of course not to the extent of a S1283.

I guess it's because the Silverstone PSUs are also made to work with the Silverstone NT06, hence the fan spinning to move enough air. Some PSU brands have a different approach. I think my Nexus PSU barely spins at idle. I guess it means that a Silvertstone PSU almost certainly fits the bill whereas for another brand a bit more research is needed.
 
Doesn't apply to OP, but anyone who has a P45 JR considering BadONE's mod, the Noctua won't fit our board.
