15.6 inch Laptop for $279.99?

doesnt seem that hot imo. id probably prefer a netbook for the longer batterylife. given the specs

but for a price of specs vs size and battery

This would win
hp mini
has not much either

i suppose if it has what you are looking for. imo its a big netbook less the batterylife. of course it all depends on what you want to do with it. it could be a good buy for yourself and anyone else.

eh i know
it`s more of a starter laptop at best lol.

i just think it`s cheap :)

According to Wiki, the single-core Celeron 900 it uses is a 45nm Penryn-based chip:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Celeron_microprocessors#Celeron.2C_.28single-core.29_4

So it should at least perform noticeably better than Atom and the battery life should be decent since its paired w/ Intel integrated graphics. So you'd be getting a faster-than-Atom netbook with an optical drive and good wireless. The price is great for what you get.

My only real complaint is that a low-resolution like 1366x768 on a big 15.6-inch screen is probably gonna look pretty ugly. At that point you'll be seeing the individual pixels.

Thanks for the info.

I think i`m going to micro center to pick this up, i`ll post some reviews on it throughout the week.

i dont think this would be faster then a atom.. Just the opposite infact. I Would pass on this & go for an atom based netbook for the same cost.

Edit.. nix that.. when I read celeron 900 I was thinking 900 mhz.. this should be faster then an atom.. Still think I would choose a netbook over this though.

I don't know what these people are talking about! This is an awesome laptop for the price. Unless, of course you plan on hardcore gaming on it. Throw another 2 gigs of ram in it and it will be an awesome machine for anything besides hardcore graphics. Performance/equipment per dollar ration on this thing is off the charts! Let us know how it goes.

The Atom based netbooks suck pretty badly performance wise so this would be the better choice unless you just have to have a netbook. I bought my daughter an Atom netbook and it was pitiful. I sold it and got her one of the dual core Celeron SU2300 netbooks and it was night and day better/faster than the Atom plus it's a 64 bit proc. I wouldn't even consider an Atom based netbook. Period.

You can get an AMD Dual-Core machine for not much more...and it would come with a Radeon 4200 which is leagues better than whatever Albatros Intel ties to it's CPU's for graphics. I have an Acer 5617 with a AMD Turion TL-60 (Dual-Core, 2.0Ghz), 4GB Ram, Radeon 3200 and it games pretty well with all setting as low as possible. Bought it a year ago for $300 at Staples and got the CPU for $12 and the extra ram for $25...runs nice! Look around...I was going INSANE with the Singlecore that shiped with it...I can't imagine the Celeron 900 being much better than an Athlon 64 mobile CPU...even basic internet and video viewing was an act of frustration! The Hyperthreaded Atom felt snappier than it! Just a heads up is all.

Ok thanks for the heads up all.

I picked this laptop up from there today at 279.99
came to like 324 after tax "Love that cali tax"

Seems decent, nothing noticable as in lag yet.
Wifi seems great.

Keybord is very simple to use.

Pros-
Cheap
Works with business software"I needed this for my work"
Numpad on the side
8x DVD burner
Windows 7
720p res
Battery is at 25 percent and I`m surpassing my 3rd hour. So it`s fairly decent!
Cons
One weak speaker on the left, I don`t know why they couldnt throw another on the right.
Kind of ugly

Overall , it`s too soon to tell weather its junk or not.
However, it seems great for the price!

I`ll post pics later, as I am typing on it right now.

hey nick

for the price give me a quad core with 6 gigs of ram and a 500 gig hd please:)

If you're brave (Like Me :) ) you should be able to put a cheap intel Pentium Dual-Core (wolfdale) in that lappy.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Pentium-D...A4H-/370397228493?pt=CPUs&hash=item563d652dcd

$17 will give you a HECK of Upgrade!

Now seriously ..... Im not to familiar with this laptop and/or proc ! is the laptop upgradable and will this chip compatible ?

I may bite if so .....

Maybe Eshelmen can confirm ? Im just wondering if the proc is welded (soldered) in ?
How long is the sale ?

I hope someone can confirm for me before the sale ends !

Thanks guys in advance
Tom

Pretty much all laptop CPUs are soldered on these days especially ones this price.

dunno about that. I got a cheap gateway a few years back and people also said the CPU in that was soldered. it wasn't and I upgraded from a 1.6 celeron single core to a core duo 2ghz without any issue.

i would love to find out what CPU's this emachines can take. maybe stick in a core 2 duo 2.2ghz in this... baby will fly.

Of course you have to look to make sure I was just saying I would be surprised especially these days as sockets add a lot of cost and the pressure on margins is a bit higher than compared with even just a couple years ago.

yep .... What you guys said !

And that's why we need confirmation ...... I think I would bite if I knew for sure it could easily be upgraded.

Just a thought.

Not so hot.

This laptop at this price comes around so often.

I hate HP let alone Emachines! Also netbooks suck for actually seeing the screen (the res is crap and the size is crap) for 250 you can buy a used asus or acer (two good for money lappys)

Why would you buy a used laptop with no warranty?
Asus and Acer are just branding man.

Why do 90 percent of Iphone users buy the iphone?
Because it`s the most hyped up product ever.

Why did SO many people buy cod modern warfare 2?
Because it was so over marketed to where every one bought it.

Why does Emachines have such a budgeted machine yes, however for the value so cheap?
Because their not marketed enough, they aren`t known as big as ASUS or ACER.

Just because it`s not as hyped don`t make it a crappy item/product.

This is an incredible deal for the money, btw I have an Acer Aspire AS7551G-5821
BEAUTIFUL Laptop , I use it mainly now instead of my Desktop..
HOWEVER!
If someone here doesn`t have the money, or does not want to overkill their budget than why wouldn`t they bite on this?

I bought this and yet I am still surprised at the way this thing moves.
I`m using all my business and networking sites at once with no problem.

BY THE WAY!!! I Checked it out guys, THE CPU I HAVE CHECKED! IT IS NOT SOLDERED ON!

For 279.99 with a warranty at new price.
And for the Resolution, 720p is fine for someone AGAIN who does not need to watch porn in 1080, or even a youtube vid at that res.

This is a beautiful machine.

Swap in that Pentium dual-core that Rauelius pointed out and you'll be able to. That'd be an awesome upgrade for $16.14. Though the battery life will definitely take a hit.

Thanks.

Btw, it`s a pull out battery like most..

I`m wondering if others would fit this size?

I stand corrected. This is the chip Rauelius was talking about:

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35153

And it appears to have the same TDP as the Celeron 900, so your battery life shouldn't be affected? It has a lower clock speed and slower FSB though. And its 65nm rather than 45nm, so its not a Wolfdale.

EDIT:

Okay, found this chip by the same seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Pentium-D...GJM-/370408333697?pt=CPUs&hash=item563e0ea181

According to Intel's spec site:

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37253

It has the same TDP as the Celeron 900, its 45nm, and has practically the same clock speed and FSB, but its dual core (I imagine the Celeron 900 is one half of this chip). Its more expensive though, but at $43.69 its still a great upgrade.

figures there are non in stock:(

So are you saying that most cheap laptops have socketed CPUs?

I replace mobos in laptops pretty regularly at work and can say I very rarely see a CPU soldered onto the mobo.

But then again not to many people ok mobo swaps on cheap laptops.

Why is this thread even alive again?
