well, i'm going to purchase a satori from malibal and they have a deal that you can upgrade to a 6970M from a 560M for free. Then there is the option of upgrading to a 6990M for $145. The price difference is this, $1347 for the 6970 or $1497 for the 6990M not including shipping. Is the 6990M worth the extra $$$ ? I cant find any benchmarks comparing the 2. Help is appreciated thanks!

i would just stick with the 6970m, i dont think the increase in performce from 6970m to 6990m is worth 145 dollars.

notebookcheck.net is where you can compare mobile gpus

if you want benchmarks, look at the HD6850/70 desktop cards. the 6990M is a downclocked 6870 and the 6970M is a downclocked 6850, the overclocked HD6850 desktop numbers will probably give you a pretty good idea of performance for the 6990M. but i'd say you are probably looking at HD5850 performance with the 6990M and HD5830 performance with the 6970M.. those would be the closest comparisons in my opinion.

what is the resolution on the laptop?

Yea, from the looks of it, its only about 15-20% increase on high settings across the board. Hmm, I just don't want to regret not getting because it's not like I can just change out the video card at will. This laptop will be with me for the next 2-3 years. People are saying they can run BF3 all settings high with textures at ultra , and the 6990M does the same with maybe 7-8 fps more . Decisions decisions

they are the same card just unlocked shaders and a bit higher clock. IMO its really not worth paying more for.

I've had a couple laptops with both cards. While the additional shaders in the 6990m will give you around 10% higher than the 6970m clock-for-clock, the 6970m generally OCs a hair better -- meaning when OC'ed the cards are within 5-6% of one another.

For mobiles I would say go for the best you can afford, 6990M.

Last thing you want to do for mobile graphics is looking at changing them.

The answer is pretty easy. If you have the money to spare, then get the 6990. 7 fps more is still 7 fps more. It could be the fine line between a playable game and not. Would you rather play a game at 30fps or 23 fps? The difference is noticeable. Like I said, if you can spare the money and want to future-proof yourself a little better than go with the 6990. It's what I would do, especially since the computer will have to last you for a while.

This is pretty accurate. I recently bought and M18x Alienware that has dual 6970m's in it. They are simply a downclocked 6850 (desktop) and the 6990m is a downclocked 6870 proportionately. I will tell you something awesome i've learned about my 6970m's though in CF. They are clocked stock core @ 680, memory 950. Desktop 6850 is core clocked @ 775, memory 1000.

The awesome thing, the 6970m's have 2gb ram a piece instead of 1gb. The more awesome thin is that I shit you not, I've overclocked mine with NO voltage bumps, never crashed once during stressing to 825mhz core, 1050 mem. Thats a healthy bump over the stock desktop equivalent even. So I'd say if you're spending the cash, i wouldnt spend 150 extra for the 6990m much less the 580m which will set you back like 300 more at least.

except upgrading from 6970m to 6990m doesnt yield 30% fps increase. its not worth 145 dollars really really not.
