Will I see much of a difference? I run everything at 1280x1024 and am currently wrapped into oblivion. Just wondering if it would be worth my time to get the new card or not.

Thanks.

At that low of a resolution, probably not. Run it higher though, and the 7900GTX will start to stomp the 7800GTX. Even the 7900GT puts a mild hurt on the 7800GTX at higher resolutions.

Well I haven't really looked into prices on the cards. I have been out of the loop shortly after I built my rig but did see the new cards were released. Since I am totally lazy right now....what are the 7900gtx's goin for? Alone those same lines....used 7800gtx's?

I run at 1280x1024 because thats native on my panels. I know, I know......I am in process of figuring out what other panels I want also.

Guess I really don't want to see the fps in Oblivion dip below 30 on rare occasions like it is now.

Thanks again.

Don't make your decision based solely on a desire to play Oblivion. The game doesn't last that long.

It doesn't last that long if you rush right through it. I've been taking my time with it and I've probably clocked in at least 50 hours and I'm just starting back on the main quest. That is only one character too, you can't just play that game with 1 character if you catch my drift.

I would not. Save your cash for Direct X10. 7800 and 7900 have the same pipes and shaders etc... just the 7900GTX can scale much higher on the core. But at 1280-1024 you should be fine with a 7800. Hell my new XPS M170 is good at 1900-1200 in most games. Also a tip, play with the fps counter off. :p

I am running 16x12 and have always liked eye candy, so I usually turn everything as high as I can and still have decent framerates.

I needed another card because I was building an HTPC and instead of getting a cheaper card for the HTPC I saw a chance to get a new card for me, and throw the 7800 GTX in the HTPC. I picked up the Evga 7900GTX EGS and got a decent OC (710/934) out of it and the gameplay at high res with 16xAF and 4xAA with Supersampling is crazy smooth.

Now at the resolutions you are playing at, might not be worth the cash involved. I would have waited for the next generation if I was going to build this HTPC, just for the new features and HDCP support, but it filled my needs perfectly.

If I were you, I would prolly wait.

Get an ATI card, an X1900XT is about the same price as 7900GTX (right?) And it spanks it, IMO. I run 1792x1344 with HDR and it gets no lower than 40fps in Oblivion. Not only that, in CS:S I do 1920x1440 6xaa 16xaf +HDR- in office I get no lower than 80, usually ~120 and in militia, most stressful map, I get no lower than 45.

I can't believe that 1280x1024 is now considered a 'low' resolution... sheesh.

Seconded. Get x1900xt its a cheaper card with better feature set.

If money is no object: sure, why not? :p

If money is no object then get a XTX for Oblivion. No I wouldn't upgrade if I were you. You have a good card.

i wouldnt upgrade if i were you but if money is fine then id upgrade...to the xtx like the above poster stated

If Oblivion is your thing right now and money is not an issue, then x1900xtx should be your choice since it does HDR+AA unlike the 7800/7900 Series.

If your going to use a single card then definitely get the X1900XTX if you do upgrade.

you WILL not see a difference at 1280x1024. I found out the hard way. I have a 2x 7900 GT setup and see no diff. So i ordered a larger LCD that does 1600x1200. You will only see benefit at that res and higher. I think 1280x1024 and lower are all cpu bound res anyway. No good for gaming. This res really holds your graphics power back

I wouldn't do it... it seems like such a waste when the performance increases you will see aren't really worth it... unless you notice an increase from 60fps to 90fps... I think the 7800gtx will be good enough for a while.

I did it and I run everything @ 12x10 as well. Go for the upgrade. If you can manage to sell off the 7800 then why not?

i say wait and save up and wait when dx10 cards come out. by looking at it the human eye can only see so much. won't be much of a difference unless you increase the resolution size and graphic details.

stay with what you have for now. you'll be fine for another 3 years.

I gave my LCD to my parents and ordered a CRT. It's nice, does 2048x1536 :D

Playing Half-Life 2 at that res or 1920x1440, etc. is AMAZING, FEAR is amazing at that rez as well. :)

My 7900gtx 512 is supposed to be here beginning of this week, and then I'm selling my 7800gtx 256 on Ebay ;)

Seriously...1280x1024 is considered HD 1080

No, it isn't. 1080p = 1920x1080.

Anyhow, I'm in a similar boat,. only I'm thinking of going from a 7800gtx to the x1900xtx.

I dont think that people are saying it is "low", more that it isnt "high":)

Because that's an upgrade... ;)

7800 --> 7900 is a sidegrade... you get the same thing but it performs a tad better.

x1900XTX is the best card out at the moment. Only an nVidia groupie would disagree with this statement.

It's able to perform on par or faster then a 7900GTX but able to use higher quality features and higher levels of eyecandy.
Only Noise holds the x1900XTX back... most people buy aftermarket coolers but I would love to see ATi hire Thermalright to make there stock coolers.

No, the 7900gtx 512 beats the x1900xtx in a lot of games and the x1900xtx beats the 7900gtx 512 in a lot of games. Neither one is the winner here, they are neck and neck. I thought about getting an ATI, but didn't want to deal with sloppy drivers, lots of heat, and lots of noise, though their image quality is said to be a tad better.
