I'm gathering parts to overhaul the rig in my sig.

In my possession now I have:

AMD 3800+X2 CDBHE 0526UPBW (Fleabay find.. :D )
Seasonic S12 600 PSU (version 2.0) already sleeved with blue uv (PITA!)
Swiftech Storm waterblock

Ordered Wednesday:

DFI Lan Party NF4 Expert (Monarch.....200.00 worth of Christmas gift certificates)

Bought Today:

Western Digital SE16 400 GB SATA w/ 16 meg cache ($189.99 A/R @ Frys)

Anyhow, I can either get the X1800XT be happy, and turn a blind eye to the X1900XT that allegedly comes out Jan 25th in stores, or I can buy a $50.00 el cheapo PCI-E graphics card to hold me over until the X1900XT comes out and get that.

I'm interested to hear from anyone that went from the X800XT to the X1800XT. It can be the X800XT PE too, because mine is clocked to PE speeds anyway.

Important to note: I used two 19 inch LCD's whose max resolution is 1280x1024. That is important to consider. Now, I was spitballing around the idea of buying two Dell 2005 FPW monitors and trying to sell these two here or on Fleabay, to see what I'm missing at higher resolutions, and widescreen goodness. I'm about to get into some money unfortunatley (fiancee and I broke up, so I'll be returning the ring and hopefully get all my money back).

So, let me have it!

Thanks in advance... Hope everyone had a great [H]oliday.

I went from a X800 Pro VIVO modded to 16 pipes at 500/500 to a X1800XL at 650/650. Which is close to what you're asking. It's definitly a faster card, I can do about 9500 3dmark05 with it. Gaming is also faster. Still, I think I'd wait to see what the X1900 has to offer. If nothing else, it'll lower the prices on the X1800's. The only reason I upgraded is that I fried my X800.

Depending on price, you might want to wait rather than an x1900 being the same price and faster, but I have an x800xtpe and an x1800xt and I definately notice the difference in speed. Awesome card. So if you do break down and buy it, you're going to love it.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. Still torn. Don't know what to do. I see that the 7800GTX's are cheaper than the X1800's, but I just can't bring myself to go nVidia. From all I've read, regardless of scores, ATI has better IQ than nVidia.

yea the gtx is cheaper, but you're also getting a 512 video meg card which is becoming more important in games lately for larger textures (Doom3 and Quake 4 already giving the option of using it) You're talking about a 40-60 price difference but you are getting more with that.

The 7800gtx 256mb is slower, half the ram, less features, lower IQ. I think the ~$50 is more than worth it for the x1800xt. No reason to be torn between the two, specially if you perfer ati :p But with the x1900 and g71 just around the corner (end of this month?) might be worth the wait. Least that will happen is the x1800xt will drop in price.

Is it really a $50 difference? The Sapphire X1800XT is $490 at Newegg, while the eVGA 7800GTX is $460. $30 difference for a big performance gain.

// Everyone who has an X1800XT should get the PE BIOS. It's like a free X1800XTPE :)

The X1800XT is a very fast card. Mine is doing 700/875, on 1.345 core volts :p PE speeds and more. As with all computer hardware you can wait and wait, but why not get the best you can now and enjoy it. Thats what I did. I just got my XT less than two weeks ago and Knew about the X1900XXT. Personally the new card will not be much faster in games B/C they are not programed to take advantage for the new hardware.

There is no real new hardware, afaik. There's 3x more pipes, and you will see the difference there.

Maybe I'll just "extend" my build..... take my time and build it up to the point of having to add the video card. I have alot to do anyway, with re-doing my loop, cleaning out the dust in my case, getting a nice slipstreamed XP copy going, etc. It's the 8th now, and Monarch hasn't even gotten around to shipping my Expert board yet. I'll just hook my Powerbook up to one of my monitors and my keyboard.

Hehehe. Of course when I get my build done, socket M2 for AMD will be out :p But you know how it goes.... once you build it, its obsolete. :D

I had an X850XT and went to 7800GTX then to an X1800XT
X1800XT runs so much better then both cards for what I play
so far Prince of Persia and BF2 are the most impressive, 1600x1200 4X AD AA 16X HQ AF in POP and it runs 50-70fps and 2xaa 8x HQ AF in BF2 and runs smooth mostly above 60fps too(1600x1200 also).

Its a fair bit faster then an X850xt(520/540) or even a 7800GTX 256m

hehe it just might, but IMO M2 will be over rated. I am waiting for what after, 65nm etc... rambus memory controller now that will be sick.

Exactly what I needed to hear. I don't know how much it would all make any difference to me anyway, since I'm limited to 1280X1024 and a refresh rate of 60 on these older Dell LCD's.

I am only using 1280x768 on my 19" LCD WS native is 1440-900(lower res just looks cleaner B/C it can use 85 re-fresh rate) so that I can run 6AA 16AF 24/7 HQ and adative AA, and games look super clean(IE no jaggies, etc..) and still get smooth fps. I am in the process of comparing my natie res and 1280 res, and fps wise nothing changes
:D
