My friend was wonder what the maximum processor that can be placed in his A7N 266 board.

Will any Socket-A chip? For example, can he put a 2500+ in and clock it somewhere inbetween the rated board max of 266MHZ, and the Chip's 333MHZ?

Or does the chip have to have a 266MHZ or 200MHZ FSB be default?

Never used a a7n 266 myself so I was just hoping someone here could help.

I have this board on my older computer and the latest that I remeber even after flashing the bios will allow up to an Athlon 2600XP. I only have a 1700XP on it, but I remeber a customer calling in about what processor to put in. But I'm sure that that's referring to the 266FSB 2600XP.

Since their a bit hard to find a better choice would probably be a 2400XP, 2200XP or 2000XP which are plentlyful of and cheap too.

Actually in my main box is a a7n266-e (nearly the same) and using a 2000+ as well. Using the newest BIOS I believe it supported 2600+. Tho the overclock supposedly isn't great. Mine is o/c'ed to 143 fsb, I've gotten it to 150 fsb, but unstable, but I believe its the chips fault (paly core)

I don't think that any version of the A7N266 will support any of the 333MHz FSB CPUs or any Barton- or Thorton-core CPUs. According to Asus, it will support only those Athlon XPs that are of the Thoroughbred-B core or earlier, and running on a 266MHz FSB or slower.
