So I borrowed a friend's infrared camera to check the insulation on my house, and thought I'd do something [H]ard with it.

The laptop is an Asus G51JX-A1, in various Power4Gear modes. Ambient temp was 77F, it's not on a cooling pad, it's sitting directly on an MDF 1" thick cubicle table. Software was 3DMark2006 with standard settings.

Power4Gear set to Battery Saving, Idle at Windows 7 Desktop. Coretemp reported 113F on the highest core.

Power4Gear set to High Performance/Extreme Turbo, Idle at Windows 7 Desktop. Coretemp reported 123F on the highest core.

HP/Extreme Turbo with 3DMark06 on its second run, whichever test is the Antarctic Outpost. Coretemp reported 161F on the highest core.

A shot of the left side where the exhaust fan aims. The wire is a USB cable for my G13 gamepad that I was using to monitor Coretemp with.

A shot of the power adapter while running under load. The strap across it is for my APC surge protector.

With HP/Extreme Turbo, on a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro using the drivers that came on the CD in the box for everything, I scored 9624 on 3DMark2006. Nothing has been tweaked.

Yeah, that does look pretty kewl.

I heard that the G51J has throttling issues because of insufficient power and when run without throttling can cause the power brick to shutdown. It would have been awesome to see an infrared comparison between throttled and non throttled under heavy load. :).

My Zalman NC2000 came in last night. I'm going to see if I can borrow the IR camera again, and if I can get it, I'll try the throttling thing.

If I'm feeling really bold, I have a 200+W Kepco regulated power supply I can put the laptop on if it shuts off the brick. I'll just need to go to the local electronics store to get the power jack.

I tried to figure out how much current the laptop pulls off the power supply, but ran into problems (my meter can't flow enough current.) But in case anyone is curious:

Battery Saving: 60% CPU Max at idle Windows 7:
0% Display = 1.2A
100% Display = 1.4A

High Performance Extreme Turbo at idle Windows 7:
100% Display = 1.8A

When I fired up 3DMark2006, it went to 5.2A then throttled because of the meter (I'm guessing.) I'll get a real ammeter and some real cables and try again sometime.

This makes me happy that I paid the extra $$ to have that diamond thermal paste put on my G51J3D :)
