avc1 mkv wont hardware decode

Im trying to setup my htpc and cant get avc1 (x264/h264) hardware decoding to work with my 8500gt. In avi it works fine (no jitter and 1-4% cpu), but in mkv format powerdvd7.3 filters either dont play or just play the first frame. In order to play a mkv i have to turn off hardware decoding.

Does anyone have a formula to get hardware decoding on a mkv with mediaplayerclassic?

What splitter is handling the MKV? Haali's, or is MKV's internal turned on? Do you have a filter pack installed?

I'm not familiar with the PowerDVD filters, but I'm guessing something is going wonky in the graph when DShow tries to build it using MKV + MPC.

Are you using the most up to date drivers for your video card and is powerdvd up to date?

Also according to this thread (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1187874) h264 decoding only works in vista but that thread is a little dated and could have been fixed.

AS of 169 all the 8xxx cards should do h264 other then the old 8800gts/ultras/gtx. The decoding works, but only for avi files.

What settings did you use to encode the MKV file in H264? If you use certain settings then it will break hardware assisted playback and you will have to default to software.
