Best SINGLE SLOT video card?!

I'm getting a Shuttle SFF, and I need a single-slot video card since their onboard sound is pretty much worthless. I was also thinking about getting a VX2025WM, so whatever video card I get should be able to play most games at 1680x1050. Is there such a card on the market right now? The main ones I'm looking at are the 7900GT and X1900GT.

The absolute best would be a 7950GX2, but shoehorning one of these into a shuttle isnt easy :p

7900GT is probobly the best bang for buck, and you shouldn't have any problems getting one to fit.

The AIW has all the pipes.

So it has 16 pipes and 48 shader units? Why is it single-slot and cheaper then? And in any case, I don't really need the TV tuner bit. I guess the 7900GT is my card. Can anyone here say that their 7900GT is good for 1680x1050 gaming? It seems like it would struggle at that kind of resolution.

Actually, from what I hear, almost any dual-slot card fits into the SN27P2. But, you lose the only PCI slot in the whole system.

I have the same monitor you do, and a 7800gt, so the 7900 should be fine. but then I have a machine with a x1900, so that should be fine, too... for a sff I'd go w/ the 7900.

i have a evga 7900gt co/sc volt modded to 1.4v and stock cooling @ 660/1850. i have been playing f.e.a.r. at 1920x1440 with 8x fsaa and everything on max except soft shadows. i get 10% btwn 25-40fps and 90% over 40fps on the in-game test. runs about the same now on intel as it did with a 3800X2 @ 2800/ultra-d i am using a dell trinitron 21" (model 1100 i think). so you should be able to game at high res no prob, depending on the rest of your machine, of course.

very truly yours,
politenessman

I probably would not use something like a X1900XT or 7950GX2/ 7900GTX in a shuttle since they have large coolers, run hot and require external power. I would go with something like a 7600GT which provides good performance with a small cooler and takes all it's power from the pcie slot. A 7900GT KO would be my next choice if the SFF power supply is up to the task.

In my Shuttle SN25P I use XFX 7900GT with Zalman VF900. Well 'SN25P has only PCi-e slot's hence no X-Fi for me. Though I have Soundblaster Audigy 2 NX (USB 2.0) that does great job. I have also Steelpad 5H USB but I doo not use it's USB sound card, simply it sounds worse then 2NX.

7950 are biatch to build in some P chassis Shuttles and requier to move one distance bolt on card and bend a little a condensators on mobo and requier beta bioses etc. etc.

According to some people 7950 works without problems only with SN26P wich is native SLi SFF.

I use 20"panel so I use 1680x1050 in all my games and 4200+ x2 and 2 gig ram and 7900GT is just enough power to play all what I'm playing on those resolutions.

Zalman cooler makes it cool and quiet to. Eternal USB 2.0 card gives You second slot for dual slot cards.

Cards with 512 MB (or 2 x 512 MB :) ) are better for high resolutions then 7900GT with 256 MB.

I am pretty sure you can use pci cards in a pcie slot just not the other way around.

7900GS or 7800GTX for single slot, and 7950 or X1900XTX for dual slot. Im just not sure how heavy U game, and will U need all that power for ur system or not.....

Battlefield 2
FEAR
GRAW
Oblivion
Quake 3/4
Half-Life 2/CSS

I think I'll need it ;)

Also, isn't the 7900GS a laptop part? The laptop equivalent of the 7900GT?

No, it's a crippled 7900GT with passive cooling iirc. In a SSF system I would think you would need active cooling however..

7900gt ftw.

7950 is a dual SLOT solution (because the thing is a fuckin bohemith and sucks up 2 spots.)
All of ATi's high end offereings are too long for your case.. trust me, I tried fitting them in.. they dont fit.

You cannot use a PCI card in a PCIe slot. You can however use a 1x or higher pcie card in a 16x slot. If creative puts out a 1 or 4x pcie card you will be able to put that into the second 16x slot on a SD37P2 (assuming you have a single slot vid card not blocking the second slot).

I wouldn't go for a 7900GT just yet... Check out the deal on Newegg. $178.99 after rebate.. which is generally around $100 cheaper than the 7900GT... I also saw This review. It beats the 7900GT in all, but Quake 4...

Sooo... hope that helps

Its not THAT big, but it is a dual slot solution, and will roast in a SFF case. Temp increase will be an issue due to limited airflow thru a SFF case, and the 7950 is a hot card already. Thats why i said a GT originally..........

X1950Pro.... but its not out yet.

if you need it right now, 7900GT or find a used 7800GTX 256 in the F/S section.

The X1900GT deal would be good except for the fact that you are only getting 12(36 pixel) of the pipelines open instead of the 16(48 pixel) of the XT and XTX, even though both are two slot.
I am personally waiting for a 7900GT to drop below $200, but in the mean time there is a 500/1500 eVGA 7900GT for $239 after rebate... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130032

The X1950 series is going to have a single-slot part?

I think you guys are missing the central point here...the card has to be a SINGLESLOT part. No 7950, no X1900XT, none of that. :)

Then 1900GT, will still be better at higher Resolutions espcially for the price.

Thank you.......If you dont know what a SINGLE SLOT SOLUTION is, please dont post, as some of you are throwing this post way off in left field. There are several good solutions out there, but being that that 7900GT and the X1900GT are the top of the line in this situation, I gotta go with the 7900GT. I know what it will and wont do. Some say ATI has better IQ, and I say at those resolutions, if you can tell, then more power to you. I prefer Nv. Sorry ATI guys.......
