Could someone please comfirm that for ADSL you need to have a modem, then you can plug that into an NIC or router etc etc. I need to link this to my friend who doesnt believe me that you have to have a modem.

Go to any DSL provider and copy + paste what's provided in a self install kit. One of those items will be a DSL modem.

You need *something* to convert the signal from the POTS line to TCP/IP.
 
Yes you do need a modem for cable, ADSL, SDSL, and of course analog lines. Some routers however do include the modem built in. Tell your friend to do a google search for ADSL modems. For safety sake you would then run a line from the modem to a router/firewall like a Linksys or some other good router/firewall. You can then share the connection.
