CompUSA to Close Over Half Their Stores

Wow! Dang... Bam... Well, at least I can hurry over there and see if there are some good deals.

If a CompUSA falls over in the forest, and no one notices, does it make a sound?

Mine closed about 6 months ago. I got some killer deals. They were selling cases of Bawls for 5$!

Odd... a new one just opened up here in southwest (Littleton) Denver about a year ago... only been there once, it was an emergency:)

There is a store on York RD here in Maryland that I have driven by a few times... I will have to
find out if and when that one is closing.

And even if anyone hears, will they care? I've never bought one piece of any of my recent (read ~5 years+) PC stuff from them. I *might* have cared, but it seems the only sorta local CompUSA store to 90405 already closed. IIRC there was one in Culver City not too long ago, but an area code search shows the closest now in Bakersfield! Yeah right. There used to be a location in my old stomping grounds of Woodland Hills, but obviously that one's closed as well. But there's Worst Buy right across the street, and Fry's around the corner (maybe 1/2 mile away) to take up the slack.

On that note, I'd love to see more Fry's locations - I've got Burbank, WH and Manhattan Beach to choose from, but I don't bother unless I go out to my sister's place in porn-abasas (read: the WH store si my only real choice)..I'd like to see a Fry's closer to the west side open up.

Not sure how many people on here know of them but didnt CompUSA buy out Good Guys about 2 years ago? I worked there part time while going to school and it was great for the employee discount, which was cost on all products in the store.

So, has anybody been to one of the stores that's closing, yet? I wanna know if it's worth it to run there after work tonight. :)

Looks like all the stores in minnesota are getting cut, closest store is now listed as Des Moines. Going to try and stop by one later today and see if there is any clearance going on yet.

crap-usa is so damned overpriced its no wonder they are tanking, when their "deals" are everyone else's prices, it is only a matter of time before they eat it. i haven't bought a thing from them since somewhere around '99 and only because it was the only store in a reasonable area that had a power supply i needed immediately

The only thing I buy from CompUSA is Bawls, guess I'll have to hit them up for several cases. :D

Looks like the one in Tyson's Corner and Woodbridge, VA are closing...not that I ever went there in the first place

Once upon a time they used to have good sales on blank DVD's and games. As of late, their sales all seemed to involve evil mail in rebates. Good riddance to that!

Funny.. just looked up the one in Pleasanton, CA seems that it now longer shows up on the list. While it was a really crappy store, their repair department didnt know shit and tried to rip everyone off that ever went there... It was nice having a second "large" store to go to for some random crap I needed on short notice. They carried a few different items than best buy did, like some random oddball modding stuff. Oh well. Their prices sucked anyway.

Omaha Nebraska is closing.
Such a shame. Those bastard Best Buy stores are going to have a monopoly here now.

Hey and by the way, I have a huge problem with Best Buy. Whenever I have needed something from BB they are always out of that item. I think their stocking abilities just outright suck. That's why this would make me upset. At least Compusa had crap in stock most the times.

I was actually hoping to get a job at one of the 2 Compusa In Paramus, NJ or rthe one in the Palisades Mall in NY. counites. all 3 stores are closing. Most of the people who work at Compusa don;t ahve much product knowledge. They just tell their workers to push the Extended service plans of people.

the only good thing about CompUsa is that they carried many CPu heatsink/fans. different Colored cables,Cases, and Case, lights. If you wanted to build your own PC this was the one retail store chaint hat you could get everything and return it right away if you need to. I Prefer Newegg but CompUSA Is great if you jsut need something today like a cable or a case light or a fan.

II am saddened by this news that the retail stores int he tech industry are not doing well. I think tat all they would ahve to do is get rid of mail in rebates and have instant rebates and lower prices. A lot of these stores hire idiots insteadpeople with product knowledge.

Looks like they're closing all the stores in the St. Louis area as store locater returns nothing within 200 miles, which is good - I may actually go to CompUSA to see if they've got any decent close out deals. Which would be the first time I've set foot in a CompUSA in years.

I used to work in the Totowa, NJ, store. I'm gonna go in there and laugh. Then buy a bunch of fans.

Looks like we are losing our store in Columbus Ohio. In a way I am kinda sad, mainly because they were another choice. I admit I have only set foot in the store twice is the last couple years. I bought my current LCD there last year because they had a sale. But for the most part, they lost my business more than 5 years ago, I would say mainly due to the internet.

If I need computer supplies, Microcenter locally usually kills their prices and cables and such, and I laugh at the PC parts prices when you have interenet stores like ZipZoomFly and Newegg. They USED to be the place go to get printers, keyboards etc. They also used to have the best prices on Media too, that changed when Sam's Club entered the city. It got to a point were the really was no reason to go there anymore.

It is sad, I feel about the same sadness when Media Play closed. My wife and I used to make regular trips to both places just to shop, but then it changed and we found ourselves no longer buying stuff at both places, so we eventually just stopped going. Then they closed, I guess we were not the only ones not going anymore.

Both the San Jose and Santa Clara CA stores aren't showing up when I do a search by zipcode. Funny, I made a CompUSA purchase just a month ago in almost 2 years for the Antec 900 case they had on sale. Guess I won't be getting my rebate on it?

That was the problem with CompUSA. Their ads were nice in the Sunday paper, but every single item was MIR. Over the years, CUSA had gotten into trouble over MIR's not being paid back to customers. When your business model competes with Fry's/BB for B&M stores, and Newegg and ZipZoomFly, its hard to sustain positive cash flow with Mail in Rebates. I wonder how fast they will liquidate their inventories for the affected stores?

I am going to go by my local store just to see if the sales have started.

It's sad to see how much a store can change in just a dozen years.

Back in 1995, I remember the one in Indianapolis, Indiana, stocking higher end parts, that were priced reasonably. I can still remember the good ol' Soundblaster 16 ASP card with a SCSI-2 connector on it, for $179.00 at the time, which was a pretty darn good price, since the mail order folks had it for $169.

I also remember sales of good quality 17" monitors at the time, for $499.00, back when such units cost well over 500 bucks through mail order.

They even had my favorite audio card for a long time, the Mediavision Pro-3D, for $249 when everyone else sold it for about that same amount by mail.

My, how times have changed. I'd go into CompUSA once in while, to see if they had any good deals on blank CD's and blank DVD's, or if there were some power supplies on closeout, I'd grab a few in a hurry. Other than that, it became more of an overpriced store that rivaled Best Buy's pricing schemes.

15 dollars for a 6 foot long USB 2.0 cable? No way, when I can get the same cable from Newegg for a couple bucks + shipping, and if I paid 15 bucks, I could buy three (volume discount), including shipping.

$149.00 for a Socket 939 motherboard? No way, when I could have gotten the same thing from Newegg for under 79 bucks.

The vast majority of posters here hit it on the nose. These days, CompUSA charges you way too much, compared to the online stores. The one here in Alabama was still selling the BFG GeForce 6600GT AGP video card for 200 bucks, as of November, 2006. They were also selling Antec Truepower 430 watt power supplies for 89 bucks at that time, when their Newegg counterparts were selling them for 129 and 69 bucks, respectively, if my memory serves me correctly.

While this really doesn't affect me (Newegg has a warehouse in TN, so I can pretty much get almost anything overnight using ground shipping), it's still disheartening to see what was once a *good* chain of stores, dying out. I just wish it could have happened to Best Buy instead.

It's really not a big loss in the Twin Cities, most people I know here go to Microcenter as opposed to BB, CC, or Compusa. (Of those that shop locally)

And yeah hopefully they'll have some good deals here shortly.

We have a MicroCenter too. The problem is, with this happening to CompUSA, MicroCenter might stop their "Hand CUSA's Ass To Them" sales they have from time to time.

MicroCenter can have some really bizarre sales.

My favorite is when they get jiggy with UPS's. The last one I went to they had $400 BackUPS Pro 1000's for $125. Limit 2.

I bought two, put them in the car, and came back and bought two more :)

All 4 of them are 4 years old now and still working perfectly. Hell, I can't even buy replacement batteries for them for $125!

So do we, and I'm amazed that CUSA hasn't closed up all their stores here, but it looks like the new one in Littleton is closing... doesn't show on their website. Honestly, out of the 5 or 6 times I've been to a CUSA it's almost empty... 3 or 4 customers and that's about it, but Microcenter on the other hand, well, it's almost a pain in the ass to shop there because it's always packed, and the lines are nuts...

I'm going to run over to CUSA tonight and see what deals they have.

And yes.... WE NEED A FRY'S IN THIS CITY!

Sux. While we do most of our buying online and a local place comp was nice place to go when we needed something asap.

I like CompUSA for little things like fans and games. They're always cheaper than Bad Buy and they have some great deals every once in awhile. I hope they don't close the one in Oklahoma City.

That's my area. The Fairfax store is going too.

I used to go to the Tysons one all the time and briefly worked in a smaller computer shop near both the Fairfax and Rockville, MD ones. Now Rockville and Gaithersburg, MD seem to be on the chopping block.

If only I lived closer to Microcenter....

Actually maybe a company like Fry's will use this as an opportunity to spread into some of these areas. It'd be nice to actually be able to take advantage of those sales I read about there.
