Is that rackable systems server quiet enough for home use? I need to be able to sit next to it in the office.

It's not quiet like a desktop, but it's not crazy loud either as I swapped the original Delta Fans for CoolerMaster units. The loudest part in the machine is the pair of low profile fans on the CPU heatsinks because they are under the drive cage.

It might be a bit dusty for it if you have blown-in insulation. This has 4 x 40mm fans on the side. But if it's batt insulation, then you'd probably be fine.

How ridiculously loud is the Rackable Systems? It looks like it has 1u fans on the processors?

The are 1u HSF's with low-pro cage fans. It's not quiet, but it's not the screamer like it used to be. I swapped the original Delta's in the back for Coolermaster Fans and it got a lot quieter. Now the loudest part is the CPU fans as you mentioned.

Clearly you have a lot of server room equipment =D
Do you have a 1/2-size rack for trade, by any chance?
