Which Intel cpu is lowest watts? I just think to built the server. I have Intel P4 Prescott 3.2ghz with HT for server but I don't want to leave server Power on 24/7. Just need server with RAID 1 for pictures and dvds. Good for network. When I own the house then one desktop for me and one laptop for my gf and one xbox turn in media so perfect for SHARE pictures and dvd from server over LAN.

P4 is around 86 watts and E6300 is 65 watts. Just need simple server with built-in video and low watts.

If under 65 watts then I will leave server on 24/7.

Thank you.

All the C2D have the same power consumption of 65 watts.
Pentium M is about 25 watts. I dont know much about the mobo/socket requirements for it though. I think there are ATX mobo for it though.

One word.

Celeron.

Since you aren't number crunching, then you have no need for high computational power.

Conroe-L will be only 35W

core 2 duo t2300e 478pin 1.66ghz TDP 15w intel 945gm, 945gms, 945pm chipsets support it.

A T2300E is not a Core2Duo. It is a CoreDuo.
In these parts it is known as Socket M, not 478. There is too much confusion with the old Intel platform here.

whats your price range. If you're concerned about wattage, I assume you're trying to be cheap by turning it off. The amount of money to upgrade probably won't be worth the difference in cost.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131007 $120 motherboard (only supports CoreDuo - NOT Core 2)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819111258 (Celeron = Core Solo) $54
or

Core Duo $197

Socket 479 motherboard will not work with Socket M chips, will it?

EDIT: Also looks like that mobo is a POS from the reviews.

Try this:

Socket M = socket 479
and unfortunately some places even call it 478!! B/c technically it has that many pins, just a slightly different arrangement.

Also the Asus has a full 16x PCIe slot in case later on he wants to drop in a hand me down videocard from his main rig, etc.

Even a Core 2 Duo doesn't use much power when idle. A home server will be idle most of the time so just about any CPU will be fairly low-power.

I'm running p3 for my backup server. If I remember correctly, the power usage is about 35W. I considered pentium M briefly but decided it wasn't worth the cost. Mobile sempron's another option I looked into, but the motherboard I got wasn't recognizing the mobile chip I got.
P3's can be had pretty cheap and powerful enough for a home file server. I even considered pentium pro, but they are not really cheaper than p3's.

Are not those wattages the dissipation at what intel considers 100% thermal load ? Would not idle and at low utilization the power consumption be much less ?

Off hand I would think finding a MB/drives/nic etc. that properly support stuff like wake on LAN, suspend to ram, spin down the drives would be the way to go. If all its doing is serving up pictures yada yada the thing would probally be fully asleep 80% of the time and in low power mode the rest.
