and now i cannot access a couple directories in the "documents and settings" folder... access is denied. i know the old admin password...

You need to right click and go to the security tab to take ownership of those directories. If you search for that phrase in the Os forum, you'll find a ton of threads with detailed instructions.

Also, if you didn't do a fresh install, you may start having weird issues. It's always a good idea to do a fresh install of a new OS.
