Hello all,
About 2 months ago i built a new system:
P4 630 3.06 Processor
intel D945P sn Motherboard
2 GB - OCZ DDR2 pc5400 667mhz gamer memory
EvGA geforce 7900 GT (256mb)
150 Gb Hard drive

I have been montoring my cpu temps for the last 3 weeks or so and they are at 55+ all the time.. i cycle my computer off at night and in the morning it will start off at 40 then within minutes be at 55 and above. I'm just wondering if anyone knows the average temps of this CPU, and what i should do to cool it down. My CPU Fan is an ultra fire http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1187029&CatId=493

Prescott core Pentium 4's (which is what you have) are notorious for being "miniature heaters", and the cooler you are using looks like a rebranded stock Intel heatsink, not really an upgraded one, more of a lateral move

of course room temp and case ventilation have alot to do with temps as well

sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but what you are experiencing is normal for that CPU in typical conditions with a low end cooling solution

there are many good ones, depends on your budget and how much better you want it to get as well as how comfortable you are with working inside your PC, as well as considering if you move your PC around alot like to Lan Parties or such or if it stays completely still in one place, as well as space limitations, as in, what size case you have and how much room in your case you are willing to give up, give us some more info and we can set you up :)

well i got 300 and some odd dollars i can spend.. i was looking to get a new case, psu, and cpu fan. I wanna get this thing as cool as possible. I don't tend to move my computer to lan parties, it stays put. I would say i'm fairly good with computers, built a couple in my day. Giving up space really ain't a big deal either. Hope that helps nobody_here.

you could get a 6300 @ $183 and a DS3 for $150 = $333 delivered from Newegg

With a little bit of overclocking your system should hit 2.8Ghz to 3Ghz. (equivalent to the best CPU available, X6800 @ $1000)

Dude, he could get those speeds with his eyes closed using a DS3

response99,

the above recommendation, now that we know you have a budget for upgrades in mind is a very good suggestion, the E6300 even without overclocking will not only provide considerable performance increases, but will also run cooler, much cooler than the P4 630 you have now, i cannot vouch for the motherboard he mentioned, the "DS3", havent kept up with the new mobos much, but any solid Conroe supporting motherboard paired with a E6300 Conroe CPU would be a wonderful buy, matter of fact, by the time you ebay your mobo and CPU you have now, you will likely be able to upgrade for very little out of pocket

is the Intel D945Psn Motherboard compatable with the Conroe? or should i pick up a better supporting one (none intel)

do you plan to overclock?

if so go with these guys suggestions for mobo's as i am not up to date on the best stable overclocking boards, i know the Asus P5W something is very popular too, but yeah, replace the mobo while you are at it

BTW:

found a really nice link where you can compare the E6300 performance to your 630 P4

http://www.intel.com/apac/core2duo/performance.htm

nobody_here i don't plan on overclocking at the moment.. i dunno if that changes anything, other then intel boards are almost impossible to overclock.

BUt as i am canadian, i'm searching on www.tigerdirect.ca (close to my house, cheaper on shipping) I have come across these:

Motherboards:

1.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2473506&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

2.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2354292&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

- ^^ in regards to the DS3, i read some reviews, a lot of people had problems with drivers, and setup. still worth the money? or is the first one decent enough for my budget?

CPU:

1.

i wish i could give solid advice on the mobo selection, like you said, if you ever want to explore overclocking, dont get an Intel branded board, get an Asus or Abit or DFI or Gigabyte or MSI, something like that, and dont get the cheapest model, the really good ones cost $150-$200 USD or so

if you are sure you wont be overclocking right at first, it may be worth it to spring a bit more for the E6400

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503395&CatId=0

or here's the E6300 with a free copy of GRAW, i would go with that one for the same price

The problem most people have had is the ram, and its not just the DS3, but all 965 motherboards. They bought high end ram with tight timings which requires 2.1v to operate, but the default voltage for ram is supposed to be 1.8v. You shouldn't have a problem with your ram.

I'd get the DS3 + 6300, and OVERCLOCK it!!! ;)

Yeah, but I just wanted to quote a nearly guaranteed overclock, so his expectations wouldn't be too high.

Thanks alot nobody_here. Appreciate the help.

anytime bro, there are alot of other people here that know alot more about this new platform than i do, but what i do know is there is no other way to go but Core 2 Duo if you want tohe fastest performance with least power and heat and highest value per dollar spent.
