Is it safe to say that All hyped games are probably not all that great?

Seems like every hyped game that has come out in the last few years has been a disappointment.

While a lot of those that go by word of mouth and not so much adverts seem to be a better game.

Are we (subliminally) starting to see the warning signs to a bad game merely by seeing a lot of magazine and web adverts?

Define hype.

Stalker clear sky isn't even acknowledged by nvidia in the 20 page mini magazine of upcoming TWIWMTBP games that I got with the last issue of maximum pc, even tho clear sky is part of that program. But other games certainly were. But its well recognized here in the enthusiast pc gaming community.

Bioshock was pretty hyped and lived upto its expectations. It had some pitfalls but generally speaking most people loved it.

Its hard to tell. A game could be pretty hyped because - it sucks and the publishers want to create as much publicity as possible and hope it sells decently well, or - it just rocks so everyone's talking about it.
Could swing both ways.

Good games get hyped so its not true to say they are not great.

crysis and GTA 4 were very hyped and didn't turn out that great in my opinion. I'm hoping farcry 2 and little big planet will be as good as I expect.

Bioshock is so boring I couldn't finish it. I told myself, "I if get one more mission where the way I need to go is cut off and I need to collect X amount of items, I quit." Take a guess at what happened to me next in the game.

TF2
CoD4

both hyped and ruled..

not Ut3 Hyped to heck and sucked donkey balls....

Mass Effect was so boring I couldn't finish. I told myself "If I just keep playing I'm bound to get hooked, the awesomeness will sink in, I will be astounded." Thus this did not happen and I couldn't force myself to play any longer.

I think hype about avoiding hyped games should be avoided. Hyped games may or may not be good. There is no correlation between hype and the quality of a game. Everyone has their methods of choosing a game. Some choose word of mouth. Some choose to research reviews by magazines. It's all presonal preference and there is no golden rule to it.

I think there are plenty of hyped up games that are awesome. I also think people try and place personal expectations on a game that are nothing like what the game is or ever advertised to be.

Also, Bioshock sucks. A lot.

Hellgate: London
BioShock

Case closed.

Bioshock fucking rocked. I hate you :) But Hellgate... Wow. Didn't last a year hahah

Depends on the studio, I notice a trend with EA over hyping games a lot. They get the occasional hit though.

Now mercenaries 2 on the other hand... Thanks to Oldie I have that damn song stuck in my head ;)

Hate to be a grammar nazi, but isn't the whole reason for hype is to make exaggerated claims about said thing. Of course, companies do it to garner interest in their games. But, I guess the correct term should really be overhype or false hype.

I don't know I'm not really a nazi. However, I have been disappointed by recentt crop of games that seem promising. :(

Edited: For grammar.

Everything is a matter of personal opinion. Hype is done by companies themselves, trying to advertise their game and hype can also be made by people highly anticipating a certain game.

Crysis was a pretty hyped game by their publishers / developers, but I thought it was a very fun game. Groundbreaking in terms of graphics, which are a treat, excellent in terms of gameplay options, but not fantastic in terms of story for example. In that regard, it's very similar to other games i.e. the Aliens invade Earth concept. Still a fun game, that was worth my money.

CoD 4 was also very hyped and it really didn't appeal to me that much. It's EXACTLY the same as previous CoDs, where we have absolutely nothing to do, but fire a gun. We can't even open a simple door...Some of the missions were fun though, so it was "ok" overall, but brought nothing new to the table.

HL2 Episodes were extremely hyped too, but I totally hated them. They're shooters on rails, where we spend most of our time escorting dumb NPCs (Episode 1) or we just go from one place to another, where billions of enemies show up from nowhere and we are forced to kill them all, for an extremely boring amount of time (Episode 2).

Bioshock was extremely hyped aswell and it didn't live up to it. In pre-launch videos, they hyped the relations between different characters of the game and how they would make the game dynamic. It was a total lie, since the only relation existed between Big Daddies and Little Sisters and even that one was very limited to "Big Daddy protects little sister". Every other NPC was just something that would attack us for no reason. The story was good though, so it did have a saving grace.

Now, from the games I pointed out, some will disagree and some will agree with me. It's all a matter of opinion and no game ever appeals to everyone, regardless of the hype it is given by their publishers / developers.

I heard lots of noise about H-L2 and it was a bunch of cock.
I heard lots of noise about Crysis and it was a bunch of cock.
I heard lots of noise about Spore and it looks like such a bunch of cock I'm reluctant to even try it.
I hyped Mercenaries 2 for myself and it turned out to be a bunch of cock.

I heard lots about Clear Sky and it rocks my fucking face inside-out.

I don't know if hype = a bad game.

It's probably safe to say that MOST hyped games don't live up to the expectations 100%. Sometimes you get a buggy POS that is nothing like what the devs promised and sometimes you get a game like Bioshock.

I liked Bioshock and Mass Effect for what they were. I had a very enjoyable time with them both. Now, I don't like limiting myself to one platform so I played Bioshock and Mass Effect both on the 360 (I later played Mass Effect again on the PC).

My quick list of hyped games that I thought sucked:

Oblivion
Crysis
Hellgate:London

Futures hyped games I think will suck:

The Force Unleashed (not PC but whatever)
Little Big Planet (PS3 only but I have one and still don't get the hype)
Farcry 2
Crysis Warhead
Fallout 3 (lol Oblivion with guns!) ;)
Call of Duty: World at War
That new Brother's in Arms game.

Yeah it's all in perspective but isn't it fun to speculate nevertheless? I figure if I think these games suck initially, I won't be disappointed when they actually do and I can be surprised if they actually don't. :D

99% of hype is bullshit.

And bonsai is right. How many times have you seen people hype up a game before its out? OH ITS GONNA BE SO COOL! I cant tell you how many times ive seen people nutswing over Spore, and how much hype was aruond all the Halos (When the last two basically sucked), yadda yadda.

Gamers are their own worst enemies.

Fallout 3 (lol Oblivion with guns!) ;)

Are you alright? It's a Fallout game ffs, with the same themes, turn based combat and all that shit, the rpg genre has moved since on.

Bioshock and cod4 are some of the most overrated and overhyped games ever.

I can't find any other way to say that, but are you stupid?

I thought the wink (;)) would offset the flame I knew I was baiting for but I guess not. You took the bait obviously.

Still, having never played the game I can easily say Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns. Yep, not playing a game is the best way to determine something about it and come to a final conclusion. <---- SARCASM

Hope my little "sarcasm" tag at the end helps this time.

Ah before your post I edited mine, I didn't mean to go all ape shit on you, it's just that I can't read it when people compare games that they didn't play the way you did, yes it was a rash thing to comment.
><

Hmm but Fallout 3 isn't hyped.
There's a lot of people thinking it will be ultimate bullshit :)
Hype was Too Human for example or SW:TFU or Spore or GTA IV

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has them and they all stink.

Look at the reviews, but generally take their criticism with a grain of salt. That's why I love when companies throw out a beta or demo!

Hell, I'll call it right now, Fallout 3 will blow huge balls. It will be rushed and consolized.

I'm still pissed that Spore doesn't live up. Was watching videos of it since early 06'

It took you all this long to figure this out? I would have thought everyone learned their lesson from UT2003.

I didn't think UT2003 was bad at all. Now, Unreal Tournament 3... :(
