I'm looking for a basic 5-in-3 rack that has the hard drives vertical, no backplane (I have a mix of IDE and SATA drives I'd like to use), fan optional, isolated mounting of hard drives a plus. Does not necessarily need to project into the 5.25" drive bay covers. I'm just looking for the mounting ability.

Something configured like this...

...but as simple as this:

Does it need 5-drive capacity, or would 4 be okay? How about 2 3-in-2s? I don't know of any 5-in-3s with no backplane off hand, mostly because I'm not in the market for such a device. Google doesn't show any in a decent amount of time; you may get stuck having to build your own to get 5 drives into 3 bays.

whoa sorry to hijack this for a bit but that lian li one is something that will work very well for a idea i've been trying to figure out on my server at home.

thanks.

5 in 3 would be ideal to use up all my spare hard drives, the Lian-Li part is a backup with a 4th drive with adapter rails in the 3rd bay. Do you have a better 4 drive solution?

Does CoolerMaster have something for the stacker that is a 4 or 5 drive mounting rack w/o backplane or hot-swap-ability?

You could just buy a sata-enclosure and remove the pcb and back side. I know it's possible with my Icy Dock MB455.

Well... yes. But that's about 8 times as expensive as a metal bracket. A convenient solution, perhaps, if the OP plans to move to all sata and use hotswap functionality, but for the extra $90 or so you don't get much if you aren't using the backplane.

Try California PC, they have the 5in3's you are looking for.

Thanks for the replies, the Cooler Master looks like it could work nicely as a 4in3.

At California PC I could only find 3in2.

I did see the larger and more expensive ICYDock solutions, but am hoping for a simple metal bracket type thing without backplane that costs maybe $20-30.
