Ok, I realize that there are a billion threads out there on this topic, but I wanted to hear your opinions on my "special" situation.

Im getting a rig that i plan on keeping for 4+ years and I want to have a high, stable oc for that long. Thus, I was wondering whether to go with the 3800+, 165, or 170. BTW, the scythe ninja will be cooling it. The 165 is about the same as the 3800+ while the 170 is about $70 more. What do you think i should go with?

What are the "average" overclocks of the 3800+, 165 and 170?

Thanks,
jcll2002

Well, I got 2.5 relatively easily on a nforce 3 board with my opteron - you might run into some problems with an x2 if you go much higher. I acheived a greater oc with my dual core opteron than my single core 3000+ Venice E3.

go with opteron 165 and save your money

does the performance warrant a $50 increase?

Would it be better to just go with the 165 and the gskill pc5000 instead of the 170 and the regular gskill pc3200? Theyre about the same price. Rembemer, i want to have the highest stable oc possible. :D

Opertown, what kind of oc did you get with your 170?

I can get the opty 165 for $261, the x2 3800+ for $280, and the opty 170 for $341. I hear the 170 has a higher multi so it can in effect oc higher. Which one do you think i should go with?

Probably the 165 at those prices. 3800+ has less cache but a higher multi. 170 has the same cahce and a higher multi. The higher multiplier should really only help you if your board is not likely to manage a high HTT frequency.

My 165 and my 3800+ hit 2.8 stable... Haven't tried much more, since I was happy with a 1 GHz/800 MHz overclock..

Anybody?

As long as its 2.6+ ill be happy :D. its on the dfi ultra infinity so i dont really need the higher multi, right?

I personally would not buy a 170 over the 165 just for the multiplier on that good a board.

Go 165 to get 2.5-2.8 - but 170 if you want to be guaranteed 2.6+

I have yet to get a 170 that does less than 2.8. The lone 165 I had.. hit 2.6 at 1.475 though. If you are spending the money once every 4 years, spit out the extra 50 bux... thats like 12.50/year.

That is because everyone that wants to report their findings have nice clocks. I'm sure most can't hit 2.8 stable on stock voltage for four years.

If you are planning on overclocking a cpu for 4 years, I say best of luck.

With any chip, even if you get a great stepping, you still aren't assured a 100% stable amazing overclock. If you want 2.6ghz for sure, buy an FX60

What are you talking about? My P4 [email protected] still LIVES... and it was purchased in 2/03/03. I honestly don't know why so many people think overclocking your proc is going to kill it... I mean I have my Celeron 300a @ 450 that still is alive an well running at home. It you don't go crazy on the voltage you are fine. The reason procs die is electromigration, and that is based on current and temp. If you keep the temp in check, and the voltage reasonable, there is no reason an overclocked processor wont last as long as a stock clocked proc.

And for the price of an FX60, you could buy 3 170s. 1 to use and 2 for spares. sheesh.

i thought that ocing lessened the life of your cpu by a few years...but not so itll be bad after 4

I would get the DDR500 G.Skills.

id get some mushkin redline xp4000 ddr 500 and OC it, and tighten up teh timmings to 2-2-2-6

not all opty 165s hit 2.5 I have a 165 that will only do 2.42 at 1.45v with an xp-120 cooler. The other 165 I have will do 2.6 at the same voltage. It's not always a guarantee. The poster who stated that only those who hit high overclocks report them are for the most part correct. Although, a 600 mhz overclock still doesn't suck by any stretch.

The LDBHE 0601 X2 3800's I've seen have been doing pretty well alot of people getting 2.6+

amen to that. you always should keep in mind that there is no such thing as a 'guaranteed' overclock. one of my 170s does 2.4 the other 2.6 at default voltage (which my board overvolts to 1.39)... as for the 170s having a higher ceiling than the 165s - i doubt it. I personally just went with the 170 because I couldn't get the 165 in europe without significantly longer waiting times. I'd say go with a 165.
