Not all flash drives are made equal. You can't compare an unknown mystery product to the one in question. Not saying the Patriot one is uber or anything, but all we know about the one you linked is its 8gb, what about brand, physical size, transfer speed, and etc.

Yeah, but normally generic drives like that do about 5 MB/s writes and 10 MB/s reads, which is horrendous. I have the 2GB version of the Patriot and I've seen 26 MB/s writes and over 30 MB/s reads.

I just bought one.

To effectively bench a drive, you MUST use test file sizes > ram size.

I use mine under linux, and writing a 3G file I can do 1.1GB/second, but of course it's actually in file system cache..... (on a 4GB ram laptop).

On a 6GB file, I get sustained sequential write on the 8GB at 5M/second and reading that back into /dev/null on linux (dd if=testfile of=/dev/null bs=1M) I get ~ 22M/second

It's livable.

I live with _much_ worse performance on my 2GB ($9?) cf cards with ide->cf adapter that I use as hard disks in an appliance I'm building.

YMMV.
