Patriot Xporter XT 8GB Flash Drive $39 after MIR

Wow, good deal. Not sure if I'll jump on this but I know someone who might.

Yeah, but normally generic drives like that do about 5 MB/s writes and 10 MB/s reads, which is horrendous. I have the 2GB version of the Patriot and I've seen 26 MB/s writes and over 30 MB/s reads.

24MB/s reads according to HD tach, so not that bad.

Be careful. I had 2 of that failed!

Use caution, and read up on the reviews.

I just bought one.

To effectively bench a drive, you MUST use test file sizes > ram size.

I use mine under linux, and writing a 3G file I can do 1.1GB/second, but of course it's actually in file system cache..... (on a 4GB ram laptop).

On a 6GB file, I get sustained sequential write on the 8GB at 5M/second and reading that back into /dev/null on linux (dd if=testfile of=/dev/null bs=1M) I get ~ 22M/second

It's livable.

I live with _much_ worse performance on my 2GB ($9?) cf cards with ide->cf adapter that I use as hard disks in an appliance I'm building.

YMMV.
