I see that 3.3v (orange wire) is included in the SATA connecter. Yet, if you were to use a Molex adapter, the 3.3v line is (obviously) not used. Why is it there in the first place?

Future solid state drives may run on +3.3.

SATA power cables have three +3.3, three +5, three +12, and six ground lines. Current drives only draw on +5 and +12, but with the growing demands of CPUs and GPUs on +12, getting other devices onto the other rails will soon be a priority.
 
Cool - thats a good answer :cool:

I'm rebuilding my server now and making the SATA cables. If I don't need the orange wire, I'm not going to include it.
