Send "instant messages" or microphone messages over network

This is one of those total n00b questions.

I have a wireless network serving to about six computers, each usually on in a room where a member of the family stays.

I want to be able to send messages to certain computers when I want to.

Is there a sort of "network instant messenger" available?
 
What OS are they running? If they are using XP just open the command prompt and type this: net send COMPUTERNAME message to send to the computer
Obviously replace COMPUTERNAME with the name of the machine you want to send the message to.
 
net send * "I'm going to get fired for using this command at work on an NT domain or Active Directory"
