I don't have any pics, but I just finished another round of upgrades. I'm up to 6 hard drives now:

250gb (system)
250gb (documents, music, pictures, etc)
500 gb (software, etc)
1000 gb (movies)
2x750gb RAID0 (tv shows, dvr)

Anybody know how I might make the 4 larger drives appear as a single volume in Windows, without risking the entire set if one of them fails? Mounting them will work alright, but won't report the correct amount of free space when I am using it as a network share. It also won't let me mount them in the root of another drive, it has to be in a subfolder for me to mount it.

Hey, I have a question for you guys. How do you configure a PC/Sever with Raid 5 or 6 with the storage drives then raid 0 or 1 with 2 drives for the OS? Is a pci-e raid card the best way to go? Thanks!

I recently purchased (2) 1TB enterprise drives from WD, put them in RAID 0 for a media server and the array kept "going away".

So last night I called WD and got off-shore tech support which was less than useless and they did not even seem to want to help.

This morning I called WD corporate not for tech support, but about tech support.

WD offered to not only replace my bad drive but to give me a free one also, and 8 of their newest SATA cables that clip on very securely but also allow the SATA power connection, one for each of my hard drives in this PC.

One extra 1TB, that will make my PC about 5.7 TB total disk space.

Should work. ;-)

Anyone can make a mistake, because they treated me well they won me over as opposed to losing a customer.

Buford, you need to read this thread:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1285254

It's in regards to the "Western Digital Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) with RAID and SE, SE16, GP Models"

If I had to venture a guess, this is probably what was causing the trouble with your raid array going away.

Hope that helps. I thought it was wonderful info!

The WD1000FYPS is the proper drive for use with RAID controllers. I am aware of the issue, but in my case when used alone the drive miserably failed SMART tests.

It is as simple as this, defective drive.

But thank you.

Hi!
So its time to change some drives in my server....i am planning to change some of my 500 gb for 1TB disk...i have a feeling some 500 gb are getting bad sectors so i will have to send them to warranty...and get another new ones....from these now.....i will have to buy new ones...1 tb cause 500 gb its not too much...neither are 1 tb.....:)

I was told not to expect 2TB drives for another year so yes 500 GB drives aren't so large any more and one needs Vista to see arrays > 2TB.

I wish I could post here. I have two Seagate 500GB Enterprise hard drives, later on I'm going to put them in RAID 0 for the OS and games etc. Then add 4 1TB drives for storage.

Hi!

I am back!

I am recently upgrading my server for next months....i pretend buying new hard drives....1 TB cause i am running out of space.....and need to upgrade my hard drives...i have 8 x 500 gb + 1 x 320 gb + 1 x 80 gb !

So, need more space!

I will be adding mine to here in 2-3 weeks, It will have a 1TB and 500GB for storage and a 80GB drive for the OS, all in a Mini-Itx case with a Intel Atom Cpu running Ubuntu Server 8.04.

Here is an update for mine:

I also have a 250GB, 160GB, and two 60GB externals I use for backups of important data.

There are some really impressive setups in here, thumbs up!! I think the Galaxy builds take the cake though. Can't fathom ever needing that kind of storage for myself. Here is my modest setup which should last me a good number of years given it's intended use.

PSU: Corsair 520HX Modular PSU

RAID Array
Controller: Adaptec 5405

wow some of u guys sure have lot of space.

most likely doing lot of special downloads :)

i got 3 1tb wd hds now.

my 720 gb seagate drive died

my main drive still the raptor 150 gb

I prob should buy a hd storage system like waht lot of you have.

which one would ppl recommand?

Depends on what you need and how much space you'd like, and if you want any RAID levels for performance or data redundancy. Most of these rigs are hand-built and custom tailored to their needs, so really, you gotta think whether if you want the benefits/risks and costs of RAID and if you want to invest in a file server/NAS.

Yup. Mine is a custom tailored setup that started in March of 2006. I wanted cheap and able to saturate gigabit. I can happily say that I can do both. I tried upgrading my OS from Fedora Core5 to CentOS 5.1, but that didn't work out(Samba bug, among other things). I have my FC5 install extremely customized and performance tuned to my setup.

RAID5/6 is a must when dealing with Terabytes of data. I have my setup further protected using linux file permissions. So, even if I were to get a Virus/some asshole got on my network, my data is protected.

Since any pretext of this being a showoff thread went away years ago....

I started with a single WD1200BB, moved to 2 with R1 on a basic controller, and from there to 3 WD3000BBs in R5, to 4, to 3 WD7500AAKSs in R5, and added a 4th. Unlike Dew, I just run a standard XP install with absolutely nothing special on it except apache, I even use the e$ default share for my stuff (and share a few folders within for my roommate). The machine was however assembled by hand and nobody else has ever touched it.

The setups here are as varied as the users thereof, and what you want from the thing will determine what you build and use.

Not as [H]ard as some others, but I'm proud of it as it's my first NAS/Storage Server.

Specs:
Openfiler OS
Antec NSK6580 Case
Antec Earthwatts 430W PSU
AMD LE-1600 2.2GHz AM2 45W CPU
1GB DDR2 800 Memory
ECS A740GM-M AM2+ 740G Micro ATX Motherboard
3x 750GB Drives
2x 250GB Drives
2GB CF Card w/ CF>IDE adapter for OS Drive.

Raid Levels:
Three x WD7500AACS 750GB drives in Software Raid-5
Two x 250GB drives in Software Raid-1 (Not in pictures, I added the drives after pics were taken.)

Total Bytes
Before RAID: 2.75 TB
After RAID: 1.75 TB

Within the next couple months, I'll probably pick up two more WD7500AACS drives to up the raid5 to 3 TB.

Note: The top 4 pics were before I replaced the old IDE system drive with the 2gb cf card (shown in last two pics)
