using the MCE remote on an non-MCE install

is there anyway to get an MCE IR remote running on a non-MCE windows installation - are there drivers that can be grabbed from an MCE install (which I have access to) or anything?

A non-MCE install should pick it up as a e-home device and work. It will not, however, work as it does in an MCE environment.

I've never been able to get it to work with anything in a non-MCE install.
