I've got a Swiftech MCW60 VGA waterblock that's about to go onto my NV 5900 Ultra (waiting on adapter bracket).

I noticed that the GPU chip is larger than the heatsink of the waterblock.

The GPU contact area is approx 33-34mm squared.

the contact part of the MCW60 is about 27-28mm squared.

Would this waterblock still be effective even though it doesn't cover the entire GPU chip?

There's a difference between the chip and the die. Is it not covering the whole die?

sorry - the die. it's not covering the whole metal part that covers the chip...

That's just a cover over the die, a heatspreader. as long as it's covering the center, say, 10mm X 10mm of the chip you're fine. I had the heatspreader pop off mine the die is about the same size as the die on a 6800.

Some heat is still finding its way toward the sides and outer edges of the IHS, however. I imagine you'll be more than fine, but you may want to consider getting some airflow on it. May help things out a bit.

Yeah those series of chips had a IHS, you'll not notice a difference. Just slap the block on there and go...
